May 26 is the day of Lukerya Komarnitsa. Kill a mosquito? Don't you dare!
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Back on May 26, people called it: Lukeria, Grechishnitsa, Lukoshnitsa, Komarnitsa, Lushka. They collected medicinal herbs and worked in the fields.
The main sign of these days was that mosquitoes appeared. Our ancestors believed that in the fall the wind carries insects south, into the warmth, and in the spring they return again. They said that if you kill at least one mosquito before the twentieth of June, then a dozen more will fly in to replace it. So, keep your slippers in your hands!
On May 26, the church honors the memory of Glyceria of Novgorod — a righteous virgin, the daughter of the city elder, who died young. The Virgin Lukerya began to be revered only in the middle of the 16th century, when miraculous healings of people began to occur near her incorruptible body.
Signs of the day — most… again… are associated with mosquitoes:
- If mosquitoes appear on Lukerya, good weather will set in.
- There will be a lot of mosquitoes and there will be a lot of mushrooms.
- Swallows and swifts fly across the sky in large numbers on May 26 — a sign of warm days.
- If mosquitoes appear on Lukerya, the berries will be born.
- Swallows and swifts were flying away — indicating warm weather.
- Large mosquitoes have appeared — the year will be very successful.
- There are a lot of mosquitoes on May 26 — it will be a sunny day.
