Memorial plaque dedicated to Andrey Usanin opened in Sevastopol

A solemn ceremony dedicated to the opening of a memorial plaque in honor of police captain Andrey Usanin, an employee of the State traffic inspectorate, who died in the line of duty, was held near the building of the UGIBDD of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the city of Sevastopol. On June 1, 1998, exactly 25 years ago, a police captain sacrificed himself to save hundreds of children’s lives.

This feat has entered the history of the Sevastopol police forever, our veterans remember it, young employees of our Department are brought up on it. Andrei Usanin is an example for us of worthy performance of duty, officer honor and steadfast loyalty to the Oath— the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in Sevastopol quotes the acting head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, police colonel Sergei Sigunov.

Veterans of traffic police spoke to the participants of the event. They shared their memories of their heroic colleague during the years of service and thanked everyone who remembers and honors his feat.

In a solemn atmosphere, Acting Head of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Sevastopol, Police Colonel Sergei Sigunov, together with a veteran of the State Traffic Inspectorate, opened a memorial plaque to Andrei Usanin, laid flowers on it and honored his memory with a minute of silence.

Employees and veterans of the traffic police joined the laying of flowers.

After the official part of the event was over, the guests visited the building of the UGIBDD of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the city of Sevastopol.

Reference: Police captain Usanin Andrey Yuryevich, platoon commander of a separate company of the road patrol service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Sevastopol on June 1, 1998 at 13:10, while escorting a convoy of buses with children on their way to rest in a children’s camp, at the cost of his own life saved 700 children.

Andrey Usanin, preventing a head-on collision, set up a Volga patrol car under a regular Ikarus, which skidded on a wet road. «Ikarus» went head-on to the front bus with children.

After the collision, the patrol car was thrown back fifteen meters, and the Ikarus went to the left, into the bush. Due to a strong blow, Andrei Usanin was thrown out of the car onto the asphalt. Periodically, regaining consciousness, he asked: «How are the children?» On the seventh day, without regaining consciousness, Andrei Yurievich died in the hospital.

He was 33 years old when he accomplished his feat. He was posthumously awarded the rank of Major of Police.
