Ministry of Resorts of the Republic of Crimea — about the perpetual environmental action “Save the junipers of Crimea”

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The Ministry of Resorts and Tourism of the Republic of Crimea informs tourists, residents of Crimea and representatives of the tourism industry about the ongoing environmental campaign “Save the junipers of Crimea”, and calls for the conservation of rare, endangered plant species listed in the Red Book.

The unlimited action was established by order of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Crimea in order to preserve juniper populations on the territory of the Republic.

The action is carried out in connection with the need to protect the juniper forests of Crimea, which are on the verge of extinction. The unique tree, listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Crimea, is mercilessly cut down due to its special properties and specific aroma, turning it into crafts and souvenirs.— noted the Ministry of Education and Science.

Currently, 5 species of junipers grow on the territory of the Republic of Crimea:

  • Common juniper (lat. Juniperus communis L.)
  • Deltoid juniper (lat. Juniperus deltoides R. P. Adams.)
  • Tall juniper (lat. Juniperus excelsa M. Bieb.)
  • Stinking juniper (lat. Juniperus foetidissima Willd.)
  • Cossack juniper (lat. Juniperus sabina L.).

All of these species are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Crimea.

Two types of junipers from the indicated species (tall juniper, stinking juniper) are included in the Red Book of the Russian Federation, as well as in the List of trees and shrubs, the felling of which is not allowed.

Article 8.35 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation provides for administrative liability for the destruction and damage of plants, including junipers listed in the Red Book, as well as for the circulation of plants, their parts and derivatives.
