More than 5,000 WWII ammunition was recovered from Sevastopol Gilzovaya Bay
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Off the coast of Sevastopol, the work of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations continues in the waters of Gilzovaya Bay. Over the past 24 hours, the department’s divers recovered 1,050 ammunition from the Great Patriotic War from the bottom of the Black Sea.
In general, over the summer and half of the fall, more than 5,000 formidable artifacts discovered here were neutralized: artillery shells, mortar shells, hand grenades, fuses of both German and Soviet production. To search for such an impressive arsenal, they made 541 dives and spent 820 hours under water. More than 3 hectares of the seabed were surveyed.
Work here has been going on for three years. The main goal is to prevent accidents with vacationers who go out into this water area on kayaks during the swimming season and organize wild recreation in this area. Therefore, together with the Department of Rescue Forces of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, a decision was made to clear the bottom of ammunition, – the press service quotes the head of the Specialized detachment of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the city of Sevastopol, Nikolai Tiselsky.
The latest finds were lifted from the depths using air-filled pontoons and towed to the neighboring, less steep, Blue Bay. The ammunition was carefully removed from the water, loaded on board a special vehicle and transported to the test site, where it was simultaneously destroyed through a controlled detonation. In 2023, work in this water area will continue until the end of October.
