Neurosurgeons of the Crimea apply innovative methods of pituitary adenoma removal

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Doctors — neurosurgeons of the Multidisciplinary Medical Center GBUZ RK «Republican Clinical Hospital. N. A. Semashko” apply innovative methods of pituitary adenoma removal.

The pituitary gland is an endocrine gland that controls the activity of other glands, affecting the functions of all body systems. A pituitary adenoma is a benign neoplasm of the anterior pituitary gland. Most often, such a tumor is detected in both men and women aged 30-40 years. Depending on the type, location and size of the tumor, patients may experience various symptoms — for example, hormonal disorders (hands increase, facial features change, etc.), visual impairment, headaches. This disease may also be asymptomatic.— noted in the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Crimea.

The world standard for the treatment of pituitary adenoma is endonasal — transsphenoidal removal of the tumor. This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove a pituitary tumor through the nasal passages. The complexity of this operation lies in the fact that under endoscopic control, a tumor is removed through an opening of about one centimeter, which can reach a size of 2-3 cm or more. To perform such surgical interventions, a high level of training of specialists and the availability of modern equipment are required to avoid damage to the carotid arteries and optic nerves.

Neurosurgeons of the Republican Clinical Hospital. N. A. Semashko have extensive experience in endonasal transsphenoidal removal of pituitary adenoma.
