«New Chersonesos» opens on July 30. Admission is free (and not only on this day)
CrimeaPRESS reports:
A few paragraphs about what “New Chersonesos” is.
And let’s start with a quote from Russian President Vladimir Putin that has already become a classic:
Chersonesos is one of the sources of our spirituality. Prince Vladimir was not only baptized in Chersonesos himself and his retinue, but then he began to spiritually unite and united all the Slavic tribes living in this territory. This formed the basis for the construction of a single centralized Russian state. In this sense, this place is truly sacred and very important for the Russian state. Everything is intertwined here: spiritual principles, state principles, historical and cultural traditions.
So, on July 30, the largest museum and temple complex in Russia, “New Chersonesos,” will open for visitors in Sevastopol. It was built in the Byzantine style next to the ancient Greek city of the same name. On the territory there are museums, a sculpture park, an amphitheater, craft workshops, a temple-park, a winemaker’s estate, a cafe…
The heart of the ancient city is the St. Vladimir Cathedral, built in the 19th century on the site of the church where the holy Prince Vladimir, Equal to the Apostles, was baptized. Destroyed during the Great Patriotic War and having undergone an unsuccessful restoration in the 1990s, today it reopens its doors to parishioners and tourists.
The construction of the New Chersonesus facilities began in 2022 and was completed in a short time, without exaggeration — just over a year and a half, and, according to the acceptance committee, without compromising the quality of construction. Buildings and structures with a total area of 140,000 sq. m are located on 24 hectares of landscaped territory transformed into a unique garden and park ensemble. As a result, a real Byzantine city has grown next to ancient Chersonesus, striking visitors with its scale and beauty.
The main centers of «New Chersonesos» are three museums.
The Museum of Christianity introduces visitors to the most important aspects of Christian doctrine, tells how faith shaped the Russian and other Orthodox peoples of Russia, literally all aspects of the life of our country, became the foundation of its multinational and multi-confessional unity, and helped to overcome the most difficult trials.
The exhibition of this unique museum will give the opportunity to make a unique spiritual journey through the endless world of the Orthodox faith. No visitor will remain indifferent when, following the halls of this exhibition, suddenly and unexpectedly for himself he discovers something very important and secret in his soul. The guide on this journey for everyone will be the holy prince Vladimir himself — the godfather of the Orthodox Christians of our Fatherland.
In the Museum of Antiquity and Byzantium, visitors will travel deep into the history of great civilizations — Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Byzantium — with their turbulent life, wars and amazing way of life, and most importantly, with their search for truth and eternity. The exhibition will remind us that our country — Rus, Russia — became the heir to the spiritual and material treasures of these civilizations, and will tell us why this is still relevant and important for us today; what we should especially protect, preserve and increase from this priceless heritage. The Museum of Antiquity and Byzantium is the largest on the territory of the complex: the total area of the building exceeds 21 thousand sq. m.
The Museum of Crimea and Novorossiya — its name speaks for itself — is a fascinating story about the life and transformation of the land that in ancient times was a place of exile, and in Rus’ in the 18th century was called the Wild Field.
Without a doubt, the following will generate great interest among visitors:
An open-air temple-park — here we will have to use the word “for the first time” again. It refers to the Temple-Park in the name of the Holy Trinity, built next to the Museum of Christianity. In this temple, Orthodox Christians can pray, and the roof above them will be the shade of vineyards, climbing roses, and crowns of spreading trees. And at night — an endless dome of the starry sky. Services will be held in the morning and evening, as well as at night.
The new modern Amphitheater «Griffin Arena» with 1200 seats, named after the play «Griffin», which has already become a calling card of Chersonesos. The Amphitheater’s repertoire will include historical productions, reconstructions of battles and gladiator fights, works by ancient and modern authors. Concerts and various mass events will also be held here (but definitely not now!).
Who built it, and what next…
Two beautiful buildings that are part of the New Chersonesus complex are located a little further away — these are the Sevastopol Children’s Art School and the Branch of the famous Artek, called Korsun. They were opened almost a year and a half ago by Russian President V.V. Putin, and today they are favorite places of attraction for children not only from Sevastopol and Crimea, but also from many regions of Russia.
“New Chersonesos”, which became the largest museum and temple complex in the country, was created with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’.
Thousands of specialists worked on the construction of the complex. The Patriarchal Council for Culture, PAO Transneft, the Military Construction Complex of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the My History Foundation made a special contribution to its creation.
The museum and temple complex «New Chersonesos» is a completely new level of organization of historical, museum, educational, leisure and cultural space not only in our country, but also in the world.
On July 28, 2024, on the day of remembrance of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir and the Day of the Baptism of Rus, the church consecration of the museum and temple complex «New Chersonesos» will take place. For security reasons, only the clergy of the Simferopol and Crimean diocese, as well as the direct participants and creators of this project, will take part in the consecration.
On July 30, 2024, New Chersonesos will open to the general public.
Entrance to New Chersonesus is free. But…
