New World, Inkerman and Balaklava are among the top destinations where the best sparkling wines are made

CrimeaPRESS reports:

October 18th is International Champagne Day. This drink is always associated with the holiday. Today, Russian sparkling wines produced both by the classic “champagne” method and by the Charmat method are very popular at the festive table. And lovers sometimes argue about which sparkling wine producers in Russia they like best.

The Russian vacation rental booking service TVIL.RU conducted a survey on social networks on the topic: where are the most interesting sparkling wines made? We are now publishing the survey results.

1. In first place is Abrau-Durso, a place with an overwhelming majority of 41% of voters. At the beginning of the history of Abrau wines, this place was called “New California”. Back in the 19th century, Abrau-Durso appeared on the table of the imperial family. And today sparkling wine of this name has the most fans.

2. In second place is New World, the choice of 26% of voting participants. This is the oldest winery in Russia, producing sparkling wines since 1878 using classical French technology.

3. In third place is Inkerman, favored by 16% of participants. The champagne winery began operating in 1938, located in mined-out adits. The residents here called these quarries Champagne. Just two years later, the first 500 thousand bottles of Inkerman champagne went on sale.

4. Taman attracted the attention of 7% of voters. The trademark «Chateau Taman» is known to many today. And it belongs to the Kuban-Vino winery, which was founded in 1956 in the village of Starotitarovskaya. The brand is called that way for a reason — “chateau” in French means “castle”, and this is what they usually call wines for which the grapes are grown within the boundaries of a specific winery

5. 4% of participants voted for Balaklava. The first sparkling wine cellar was founded here in 1889. And already in 1900, at the World Exhibition in Paris, during a “blind” tasting, Crimean sparkling wine, the progenitor of the Golden Balka, received the Grand Prix.

6. Dagestan was chosen by 3% of voters. Derbent and its surroundings are considered an ideal terroir for growing both international and autochthonous grape varieties. The winery in Derbent was built in the 19th century, but it began producing wines of the “Soviet Champagne” brand only in 1982, after which sparkling wines became its specialization.

7. Divnomorskoye was chosen by 2% of subscribers. The history of the Divnomorskoye Estate winery is not so ancient, but this place near Gelendzhik is the southernmost terroir of the Krasnodar Territory. The first sparkling wines went on sale at the end of 2013; they are produced using classical technology with secondary fermentation and aging in the bottle for at least 2 years.

8. Don Valley collected 1% of the votes. It was here that the history of the famous “Tsimlyanskoe” began in 1786, which many enjoy drinking today.
