Ninety (!) Crimeans became victims of online scammers last week

CrimeaPRESS reports:

In Crimea, crimes against citizens continue to be registered remotely — through calls, the Internet, installing malicious applications and clicking on links. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea, from February 5 to February 11, 90 citizens became victims of remote scammers.

CALLS.

45 citizens who suffered from the actions of fraudsters using this scheme contacted the police.

In most cases, scammers call using logos of well-known banks and introduce themselves as specialists from financial institutions or law enforcement officers. They intimidate victims with stories that unknown people are making suspicious transactions in their accounts and trying to steal money. Then they propose, in order to preserve savings, to transfer money to so-called “reserve” accounts, convincing citizens that their money will be safe this way and attackers will not be able to cash it out. However, it is not! Unsuspecting victims transfer large sums to the accounts dictated by the scammers, after which the calls stop, and the victims realize that they do not have access to new accounts— said the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.

A local resident contacted the Alupka police after becoming a victim of a scammer. An unknown person called the man and introduced himself as an employee of a cellular company. Under the pretext of renewing the contract for servicing the subscriber number, the attacker took possession of the applicant’s funds.

A resident of Simferopol told police that an unknown person called her and introduced himself as a bank employee. Under the pretext of canceling a loan issued in the name of the applicant, he took possession of the woman’s funds.

A resident of Feodosia told the police that unknown people called him and, under the pretext of protecting cash deposits from alleged fraudsters, took possession of the applicant’s funds.

28 of the specified number of CALLS were made through instant messengers, including using the logo of one of the leading banks in Crimea.

A resident of the Simferopol district told police officers that an unknown person called her via WhatsApp messenger and introduced himself as a bank employee. The caller said that the scammers were trying to apply for a loan in the applicant’s name and that in order to cancel the application, it was necessary to issue an alleged counter loan. Succumbing to panic, the woman applied for a loan and sent money using the specified details, and later realized that it was a fraudulent manipulation.

A resident of Dzhankoy told police that an unknown person called him through the Telegram messenger and introduced himself as a bank employee. The caller informed the man that due to a fraudulent attack on one of the marketplaces, the applicant needed to transfer funds to a “safe” account. Confused, the man made a transfer using the specified details, and later realized that he did not have access to the new account.

INTERNET SITES, SOCIAL NETWORKS.

Over the past week, 26 cases of fraudulent activity were associated with the use of social networks, instant messengers and Internet sites.

On free classifieds sites and in groups on social networks, attackers post:

  • advertisements for the sale of various goods;
  • job offers via Internet sites;
  • information about easy earnings through investments.

A resident of Simferopol filed a fraud complaint with the police. The man reported that an unknown person, using the Drama Theater phishing website, took possession of the applicant’s funds under the pretext of selling tickets.

A resident of the Chernomorsky district told police that on one social network he saw an advertisement for the sale of rare coins. The unknown person, who was allegedly the seller, misled the applicant and took possession of the latter’s funds.

INSTALLING THIRD-PARTY APPLICATIONS AND FOLLOWING LINKS.

19 citizens fell for scammers, followed links from an unknown source and installed malicious applications.

A resident of the Kirovsky district contacted the police, saying that she was selling a phone through an Internet service for posting advertisements. An unknown person contacted her and, under the pretext of purchasing a gadget, fraudulently took possession of the applicant’s funds after she entered her bank card details using the link provided.

A resident of Dzhankoy contacted the police with a statement that an unknown person, under the pretext of selling a woman’s coat to the applicant, took possession of the funds after the woman filled out a form using a link sent to her.

A resident of the Saki district received a call from an unknown person in the Telegram messenger. The caller introduced himself as a bank employee and, under the pretext of saving money, took possession of the applicant’s finances after he installed a malicious program on his mobile phone.

The police once again reminds:

Don’t rush into decisions regarding money. Remember! The security of your financial assets depends only on you.

Be vigilant and follow the recommendations:

  • do not believe people who present themselves as law enforcement officers and banking employees who report that any transactions are being made with your money account right away;
  • do not follow unknown links received to you via messengers from third-party sources;
  • do not install applications on your mobile phones that you are hearing about for the first time or do not have detailed information about how they work;
  • do not follow the instructions of unknown citizens trying to convince you of quick “easy” money — no one is interested in helping you get rich for free.

If you have become a victim of scammers, immediately report it to the police by calling 102 or submit a written statement to any nearest police station.
