Northern State University scientists have developed a method for protecting ships from corrosive wear in the waterline area

A scientific group led by Vadim Kramar, created two years ago as part of a project under a grant from the Russian Science Foundation, proposed how to make cathodic protection from an external current source more effective. Using a neural network, scientists created a predictive model to accurately select protective potential.
We calculated the potential that is necessary to provide protection both from further destruction of local defects and the variable waterline area— the press service of the university quotes Anna Rodkina, a member of the research group, associate professor of the basic department of “Innovative shipbuilding and shelf development technologies”.
Neural network modeling will make the operation of the suspended anode assembly, through which current is supplied to protect the underwater part of ocean engineering structures, more efficient. In the future, an electronic model of the functional properties and technical condition of the steel of the underwater part of an operating offshore facility will be developed, updated in real time.
Scientists also proposed installing special casings made of moisture-retaining material in the area of the variable waterline.
Due to different wave heights throughout the year, the area of variable waterline (about 2-3 meters above sea level) periodically remains humid in the air, due to which salts accumulate on its surface and corrosion progresses. In order to protect a surface using electrochemical cathodic protection, we need to increase the level of permanent wetting. We suggest doing this using special materialsays Anna Rodkina.
Scientists have yet to select the strongest material, so despite the end of the grant, work on the project will continue. The work of Sevastopol scientists will extend the service life of sea vessels and structures.
