November 12 is the day of Zinovia and Zinovy. You can also meet evil spirits in the forest…

CrimeaPRESS reports:

November 12 is also called the Sinichka holiday or the holiday of hunters. People believed that on this day it was necessary to go to the first powder in order to shoot at least one hare — then next year you would constantly return with prey. Hunters usually called the first hare the birthday boy. They were happy if they managed to catch him — then the whole year promised to be very successful.

By the way, hunters had a custom of negotiating with the goblin so that he would not confuse his tracks in the forest and would help get more game, and also protect people from danger (especially from wild animals). So, the hunter promised Leshy that he would behave diligently: not to beat the animal too much, not to trample the grass, not to break bushes, not to touch animals with cubs. If the promises were not fulfilled, then the goblin would get angry and could punish the person: confuse their tracks, scare them, give them a fever, whip them in the face with branches, etc.

In addition, on November 12, the holiday of fishermen and hunters was celebrated. In the northern regions, right now they were setting off for winter fishing. For this reason, they were given a magnificent farewell and various rituals were used, which were believed to help attract good luck.

The Church today honors the memory of the martyr Bishop Zinovy of Yege and the martyr Zinovia, who was his sister. Both martyrs were born into a pious family around the 3rd century in the territory of Cappadocia. They were left orphans early. Deciding to give their inheritance to poor people, they dedicated themselves to God. As a reward, Zinovy received the gift of miracles and, with the help of prayer, began to heal the sick. As a result, the city residents found out about this and elected Zinovy as bishop. However, when power was concentrated in the hands of Emperor Diocletian, mass persecution began against supporters of the Christian faith. This led to the fact that Zinovy was arrested and began to demand that he renounce Christ. However, Zinovy remained adamant in his convictions, for which he was subjected to numerous tortures. Having learned about this, Zinovia herself appeared at the trial, as a result of which she was executed along with her brother.

Signs of the day:

  • A tit flew into the yard — fortunately.
  • The snow fell in a fine powder — severe frosts will come soon.
  • Wolves are gathering in packs — next year promises to be hungry.
  • A lot of tits around means severe frosts.
  • Tits peck bark from trees — a sign of damp and rainy weather.
  • Tits chirp loudly — for clear weather.
  • If tits sing from early morning, expect frost at night.
  • If a hunter catches a hare on this day, and a fisherman catches a red fish, this means successful fishing for the whole year.
  • A hare crossed the road — unfortunately.
  • Meeting a wolf on the road on November 12 means big trouble.
  • If a hunter on this day meets a crowd of other hunters in smart costumes in the forest, he must run away from them headlong — according to legend, these are devils or restless souls of those who perished in the forest or got stuck in a quagmire.
Name days are celebrated today by: Maxim, Mark, Alexander, Artem, Matvey, Yulian, Leonid, Elena, Anastasia, German.
