November 14 was popularly called the Chicken Coop. The name of the day was given very accurately, since now it was necessary to move the chickens to the warm corners of the barn — the weather was getting quite cold, and it was important to protect the poultry from them. At the same time, weak chickens were noticed and were slaughtered in the near future.
And on November 14, they honored Dvorovoy, one of the house spirits, the younger brother of the well-known Domovoy. If he is not appeased, if he is not fed with ritual porridge made from millet, he could do some mischief: ride the horses to death and ruin all the utensils that are in the yard. To teach a lesson to a small pest, in some yards they dipped an old broom in tar. It was believed that in this way Dvorovoy would get dirty and calm down.
It was not allowed to work on November 14th – it was a sin. But from the next day, women could sit down to needlework with a clear conscience and spend long autumn and then winter evenings sewing, yarning and embroidering.
The church today honors the memory of two brothers named Daman and Kosma (Demyan and Kuzma), who are known as unmercenary saints of the 3rd-4th centuries. They were left without a father early on, and their mother, Saint Theodotia, was in charge of raising the children. As adults, Kozmu and Demyan learned the art of medicine. They led a righteous lifestyle, for which the Lord rewarded them with the gift of healing the sick and infirm. True, the brothers never took money for help, for which people called them unmercenary.
AND! On November 14, our ancestors celebrated the welcome of winter and “commemorated” autumn. “Kuzminki is a wake in the fall,” says an old Russian proverb.
