November 15 – Akundin day. Treat the Ovinnik with a glass and a loaf of bread!

CrimeaPRESS reports:

November 15 was also popularly called Zhitnitsy. The peasants continued to dry grain in barns, prepared amulets for the bins, and protected them from rodents. Meanwhile, the daylight hours were noticeably decreasing — we were waiting for frost to approach. They revered the stove fire, lit the stove hot, warmed themselves next to it with the whole family, telling each other entertaining and scary stories in the evenings. The girls wondered by the stove fire about their future fate. Those who were older made plans for the future and willingly shared them with loved ones.

And on November 15, they appeased the barn — the domestic spirit living in the bins. People imagined him as a creature that looked like a black cat with glowing eyes. But he did not accept his true face in front of people. Those who were lucky enough to see him were told that the ovinnik was a small, gray-haired old man or a tall, healthy man with a stern look. He helped good owners, but often did mischief to bad and careless ones: he burned sheaves and stole grain. In order for the barnkeeper to be kind, on this day they brought him a glass of vodka, a rooster and a loaf of bread.

On November 15, Akindin (Akundin) and Pigasius are also heard. They were courtiers of King Solomon and secret Christians. When Solomon began persecuting Christians, envious people reported them to him. At the trial, the saints confessed their faith, for which the king ordered them to be beaten with whips. The executioners changed twice, tired of beating them. But during the torture, the martyrs did not utter a word. Even Solomon could not stand this sight and fell unconscious. Many thought that he had died, but the saints prayed to the Lord and the king came to his senses. He called them sorcerers and ordered them to be led over the fire so that the men would choke on the smoke. But the fire suddenly went out, and the ropes with which Akindinus and Pigasius were tied fell apart. When the king asked how this could happen, the saints told him about Christ. Solomon was angry and began to blaspheme the name of God, for which he soon became speechless. He tried to gesture to the guards to execute the men, but no one could understand the king’s orders. Then he started tearing out his hair and hitting himself in the face. The saints took pity on him and asked the Almighty to restore his ability to speak. But Solomon could not calm down. He ordered the men to be placed on an iron grate and a fire to be lit under them. Suddenly it started to rain and the flames went out. At this moment, many witnesses to the events that took place accepted the Christian faith. One of the executioners asked the martyrs for forgiveness for the acts committed against them.

Signs of the day:

  • Mud on the roads — the heat will last until the beginning of December.
  • The bullfinches are screaming — frost will come soon.
  • Tits and jackdaws fly around the yard — it means snowfall.
  • The sky is overcast with clouds — a thaw.
