People said that from November 3 we should expect truly winter frosts. The cold is about to become persistent, severe and prolonged. In most regions of the country, by the way, on this day the first powder usually fell — dry snow creeping along the ground. However, the autumn thaw was not going to subside. Therefore, on this day, old people did not recommend driving anywhere on a country road in order to avoid troubles.
By the way, we were afraid of the roads that day for another reason. The thing is that our ancestors considered roads and paths to be unclean places. So, it was impossible to build a house next to the road — unfortunately, to plant a garden or vegetable garden — to eternal crop failures. At the crossroads of several roads, they usually buried those who, according to church traditions, could not be buried in the cemetery. These are suicides, unknown dead, unbaptized babies. Naturally, in this regard, roads in the Russian consciousness were associated with dark and unknown forces.
On November 3, the Church honors the memory of St. Hilarion the Great and Hilarion of Pskovezersk:
- Hilarion the Great lived in the 3rd-4th centuries. on the territory of Palestine, and Illarion of Pskovozersky — near Lake Peipus in the 15th century. Hilarion the Great first studied science in Alexandria, and then returned to his homeland and decided to retire to the hermits who lived near Gaza. It is Hilarion the Great who is considered the founder of the first monasteries in Palestine. He was actively involved in preaching, and at the end of his life he decided to go to Egypt, where he died after bowing to the tomb of Anthony the Great. Hilarion died on the island of Cyprus, and he predicted his death earlier.
- If he talks about Hilarion of Pskovozersk, then he was a student of St. Euphrosynus of Pskov and is known as the founder of the Ozersky Intercession Monastery on the banks of the Zhelchi River, which flows into Lake Peipus. It was Hilarion who became its first abbot, and the monastery itself subsequently became a fairly famous religious center. Moreover, Orthodoxy quickly spread among local residents, even despite the proximity of the Livonian Order.
