November 5 is the day of the Apostle James (Jacob). Feed the birds and eat honey

CrimeaPRESS reports:

During this period, our ancestors saw off autumn. They actively prepared for winter: the men chopped firewood for winter, repaired winter harnesses for horses, and did all the hard work around the house and in the yard. Unmarried girls wove festive reins for the wedding train and gave them to their grooms. In the evenings, the whole family gathered at one table and drank intoxicating beer brewed specially for this day and ate honey.

On this day, there was also a custom of carefully looking at the sky in anticipation of the first snow pellets (if, of course, the first snow had not yet fallen). It was believed that with the “groats on Yakov” real winter would come to the earth, a sled track would be established, and it would be possible to safely set off on any long journey.

People also said that birds on November 5th could calm the earth with their singing.

The Church today honors the memory of James the Younger, one of the 70 apostles, who was nicknamed “the brother of the Lord.” There are many versions of the origin of this nickname. The most common one is that James was, in fact, Jesus’ cousin. They also said that he was the son of Joseph and was born before he became engaged to Mary. Tradition says that in his earthly life, Jacob at first did not recognize Jesus as the Savior, but only after the death and resurrection of Christ changed his mind. James is also known as the first bishop of Jerusalem. At the age of 63, he suffered martyrdom — the pagans, according to legend, threw him from the porch of the temple and then stoned him.

Signs of the day:

  • A lot of snow has fallen, and it has not melted — the winter will be warm, and next year we can expect a good harvest.
  • It is necessary to go out into the field on November 5th and inspect it, lay out pieces of pie or bread for the birds — this will attract good luck.
  • If a person was born on November 5, then his talisman is chrysoprax.

  • The more honey you eat, the more you will collect next year.
