November 9 is Matryona's day, Paraskeva's day. If you don't deliver, don't promise!

CrimeaPRESS reports:

People noted that on this day the rivers and lakes are covered with the first ice cover, and quite noticeable frosts set in. In addition, in the old days this day was called “Vows”. There was a custom of making promises on November 9 that had to be fulfilled. Typically, such promises concerned the spiritual side of a person’s life: to impose a multi-day fast on oneself, to do only good deeds, to build a temple, to give alms as often as possible, to become a monk, etc. But sometimes they also concerned the everyday side of life (for example, building a house for the next year, getting married, making some important decision, etc.). In addition, women wove fine blankets on November 9 to donate to the church the next day.

The church itself now honors the memory of the martyr Paraskeva, who lived in Asia Minor in the 3rd century. Paraskeva was born into a wealthy family, and her father was a senator. However, despite the fact that she was practically guaranteed a rich and happy life, Paraskeva decided to devote herself to God and led an ascetic lifestyle. During the reign of Emperor Diocletian, mass persecution of Christians was organized. At the same time, Paraskeva was caught and tortured to death.

And on November 9, the day of Nestor the Chronicler is celebrated, who became famous for his chronicles — the most ancient in the world. In addition, Nestor is a monk of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, and it was his pen that belongs to The Tale of Bygone Years, in which Nestor described in detail the life and deeds of the first princes. Scientists say that it was Nestor the Chronicler who was a contemporary of the apostles and many saints who are known in the Christian church.

Signs of the day:

  • The goose goes out onto the ice on November 9 — it will swim on the water for a long time, which means winter will not come soon.
  • Frost on the trees on November 9 foreshadows frost.
  • Fog in the morning — wait for a thaw.
  • Snow fell on the damp ground — spring, according to signs, will be early, and you will be able to see a large number of snowdrops.
  • If a person was born on November 9, then his talisman is obsidian, and the birthday person himself will be endowed with the gift of writing.
  • If one of your household (as well as livestock) suddenly gets sick, you need to make a vow to yourself and, no matter what, fulfill it as soon as possible.
  • If the doctor performs an operation on this day, before doing this he must put a glove first on his left hand, and then on his right.
  • If on November 9, during a performance, an actor accepts fresh flowers as a gift, this promises him a quick loss of popularity.
