October 10 – Savvaty the beekeeper. We remove the hives — prepare for the winter

CrimeaPRESS reports:

October 10 – On this day, the peasants completed cleaning the hives in the omshaniks. The bee nineties were coming to an end. According to popular beliefs, Savvaty, the heavenly patron of bees, locks his charges in their hives for the winter, which is why they turned to him with a request to help. Beekeepers told the children to pray to the saint, because beekeeping and beekeeping were considered matters requiring absolute moral purity, and, as you know, children under twelve years of age are sinless.

People say: “They love an apple tree for its apples, and a bee for its honey.” In August, beekeepers collected a sweet harvest, filling all the pot-bellied tubs and birch bark tueskas. And at this point, it’s time to take care of the “God’s flies” themselves.

The whole summer, God’s servants were busy getting wax (which was used for candles) and filling honeycombs with fragrant nectar, so that in the cold, people could, by lighting splinters and wicks, indulge in honey in warmth and comfort. The people’s favorite sweet is so good that with it “you can eat a piece of it, swallow a chisel, and then sit and ask for more.”

Signs of the day October 10:

  • Rain and snow promise strong thaws in January, as well as a rainy and cold June.
  • If the first snow falls on this day, then real winter will come in 40 days.
  • The north wind means a cold winter, the south wind means a warm winter.
  • If the bees close the entrance tightly, the winter will be frosty.
  • Clouds float from south to north — to bad weather, from north to south — to good weather.
  • Dry weather on this day indicates that cold weather will not come soon.
  • A thunderstorm on Savvatiya means a snowless, warm and short winter.
  • There are a lot of cones on pine and spruce trees — the winter months will be cold.

Name day is celebrated on this day:

German, Victor, Aristarchus, Mark, Dmitry, Fedor, Ignatius, Akulina, Mikhail, Peter.

The Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Savvaty of Solovetsky

October 10Founder of the monastery on Solovki. No information has been preserved about where the saint came from, who his parents were and at what age he accepted monasticism. It is known that in the days of the All-Russian Metropolitan Photius, Savvatiy labored in the Belozersky monastery, located in the Novgorod region.

For the fulfillment of his monastic vows, the monk was revered and loved by everyone, being a model of hardworking and virtuous life for other monks of the monastery, therefore his name was constantly glorified by the abbot and the brethren. But Savvaty was burdened by the glory given to him and thought about leaving the monastery and looking for a new place for monastic exploits, where he would live in obscurity and solitude from people.

Soon Savvaty asked the abbot and the brethren of the Belozersky monastery to let him live in the Valaam monastery. He was blessed and released to the island of Valaam, where he was joyfully received by the brethren of the monastery. The ascetic spent a lot of time in the new place. He surpassed everyone in asceticism. His virtuous life became known to everyone in Valaam. Over time, the saint began to be burdened by the praise and veneration of his brethren. He again began to think about finding a secluded and silent place for his exploits.

On the Solovetsky Islands

Having heard about the uninhabited Solovetsky Island, located two days’ sail from the mainland, among the cold waters of the White Sea, the elder decided that this was an ideal place for him. He began to ask the abbot of the Valaam Monastery to let him go, but the abbot and the brethren began to beg the saint not to leave them. Savvaty lived with them for some more time, and then secretly left the monastery at night.

Guarded and guided by God, he headed to Solovetsky Island. When he came to the sea, he met people living on the seashore of the mainland. He began to ask them about the island. They told him that this place was quite convenient for human life, but the path to it was difficult and dangerous, and it was possible to get there only in good weather.

Having learned that the elder wanted to settle there, people began to dissuade him in every possible way, but Savvaty was adamant. He went to the Vyg River, where he met the monk Herman, with whom he lived for some time. After consulting with each other, both companions decided to settle together on Solovetsky Island. When the weather was calm, they took a boat, prayed to God and set off. On the third day they reached the island, where they erected a cross and built themselves a cell.

Warning to fishermen

After some time, the Pomeranians who lived near the island began to envy the elders living peacefully on Solovetsky Island. One day a fisherman and his wife arrived on the island and settled there. One day, while walking around the island, a woman met two luminous young men who grabbed her and began to beat her with rods, saying: “Leave this place, you don’t deserve to be here. Leave quickly, otherwise you will die an evil death» After the incident, the fisherman took his wife and belongings and sailed home. No other layman thought about settling on the island.

A few years later, the monk Herman retired to the Onega River, and Savvaty remained on the island himself. Anticipating his imminent death, he wanted to confess and receive communion. After praying to God, he boarded a small shuttle and went to the opposite shore of the sea. Coming ashore, he met Abbot Nathanaili, who was going to the village to give communion to a sick man. They started talking, and Savvaty asked the abbot to come to him upon his return from the sick one. But when Nathanael returned, the saint had already presented himself to God. The abbot cried for a long time and kissed his body, after which he buried him.

Savvaty Solovetsky died on September 27, 1435 (old style).
