October 11 is the day of Ilya Muromets. They can jinx it now…

CrimeaPRESS reports:

And the day of Ilya Muromets was called Khariton, Nikola Svyatosha, Kharitonov day, Catalshchik, Khariton the Birthday Man, Katanik, Autumn Nikola.

October 11 was popularly considered a difficult and even dangerous period. They said: “Khariton is a loss in the hut.” They were afraid and tried not to leave the house unless necessary. According to beliefs, right now you can be exposed to the evil eye and damage. Therefore, on these days, for the most part, we did homework. It was impossible to sweep dirty linen out of the hut, as this could lead to trouble.

But if damage was nevertheless caused, then you could get rid of it in different ways. For example, read a special spell while holding a knife in your left hand and a glass of water in your right. Then stand on the creaky floorboard in your home and drink this water. The last sip should have been poured on yourself and the knife thrown away.

In addition, on this day, according to ancient belief, it was forbidden to eat berries in any form. They believed that the devil, three days before the Intercession, spat on all the berry bushes, so those who did not listen and ate them were sick from the demonic saliva for a very long time.

As for Ilya Muromets, this epic hero was greatly revered by the people. He was considered a protector of people and a protector from enemies.

On the evening of October 11, the Autumn St. Nicholas was celebrated, “evenings” began when young people gathered in spacious summer kitchens to cook honey. The juice, squeezed and prepared during the day, was poured into huge cauldrons or cast irons.

Some young couples went to “marry” (take a walk and sit in solitude). By dawn, everyone was sure to return “to the honey.” The young housewife cut a loaf of bread on the table, brewed tea and treated everyone to fresh honey. That is why this holiday was also called Mikola the mead maker or Mikola the Svyatosha the honey bearer.

On October 11, the church honors the memory of Saint Chariton the Confessor, who lived in the territory of Asia Minor (the city of Iconium) in the 3rd-4th centuries. He lived during the reign of Emperor Aurelian, known for his hostility towards Christians. Therefore, during his time in power, mass persecution was carried out against supporters of Christ. During one of them, Khariton was captured. The pagans brutally beat him, after which they threw him into prison, from which he was released after Emperor Tacitus came to power. Chariton went to the Holy Land, but not far from Jerusalem he was captured by robbers who took him to their cave. Khariton was saved from death by a snake that poisoned the wine with its poison. The robbers drank it and died immediately. Khariton remained to live in the cave and built a church there, where his own community was formed, after which the Faran Lavra was formed — the first church in this territory.
