October 12 is the day of Maryamna the Sorrowful and Theophan the Merciful
CrimeaPRESS reports:
And this day was also popularly called Otkhodnik, Kiriak the Hermit, Theophan’s Day, Kiriak’s Day, Theophan the Autumn. The main characters of this day are hunters. This is their holiday. There was a widespread tradition of walking through the powder to get a hare. Also, October 12 ended with feasts — gathering at a party, communicating and having fun.
As a rule, the weather on this day is warm and cloudy. There may be light drizzle and fog. Our ancestors said that “Maryamna is woven from fog.”
The Church today honors the memory of Saint Cyriacus the hermit, who became a monk at the age of 18, having joined in Corinth on the territory of the monastery of Saint Euthymius. Kiriak became famous for the fact that at the age of 70 he decided to retire to the desert, where he was served by a large lion. It was this ferocious beast that protected Kiriak from robbers and took food from his hands. However, the same lion never dared to touch those people who came to Kiriak for advice or reassurance. The saint died at the age of 109 in 556. Then illness befell him, but Feofan endured the suffering courageously. 4 weeks after his death, Theophanes appeared to one of his novices and asked him to open his own grave. People did this and felt a wonderful fragrance, seeing that the relics of the saint exuded myrrh, healing the sick.
Signs of the day:
- If the sky is starry on Feofan, then autumn will be dry.
- If fog appears at night or late in the evening, there will be no frost.
- If late mushrooms grow in the forest, then the snowball will be late.
- If the morning fresh breeze intensifies during the day and weakens in the evening, then the weather will remain clear.
- If the first frost is late, then the winter weather will be mild and changeable.
Ivan celebrates his name day today.
