October 13 is the day of Mikhail Solomenny. Getting the house in order

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The main task that people solved on October 13 was trying to update their pillows and mattresses. Old straw was usually burned, and all things were filled with new straw. They also put things in order in the house as a whole — after all, the Feast of the Intercession was approaching. They threw out the trash and covered the porch and house with fresh straw. Peasants associated October 13 with straw, because they believed that it absorbed all the power of the earth. They said that Russian people were born on straw and died on it. They usually slept on straw, it was used to make curtains for windows, and they fed cattle with straw. If the summer was wet, then the straw rotted, but even here it was not thrown away, but was used to cover the roofs of the huts.

And on October 13, there was a widespread tradition of pouring water over children through a sieve, placing them on the threshold of the house — it was believed that this would help protect against diseases. By the way, the sieve and the threshold were considered symbols of the other world, the border between home and another land. The sieve was also associated with wealth.

On October 13, the church honors the memory of St. Michael, who is known as the first Metropolitan of Kyiv. According to legend, Patriarch Nicholas II of Constantinople instructed Michael to go to Korsun, where he was to baptize Prince Vladimir. A little later, the saint visited Kyiv, where he converted many to the Christian faith. Now the relics of the saint are in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.
