Today they celebrate a great event — the appearance of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Constantinople in the 10th century, in the Blachernae Church, in which the omorph and robe of the Mother of God, as well as part of Her belt, were kept.
People said that on October 14, the Mother of God herself sows the fields, and the Pokrov reaps the harvest. That is why this was the deadline for completing agricultural work.
And now the wedding season has begun. Falling snow was a lucky sign for the engaged. The girls said: “White snow covers the ground, isn’t it me, the young one, who is preparing to get married?”, “Father Pokrov, cover the wet ground and me, the young one.”
We also went to the forest to pick mushrooms, since right now a large number of saffron milk caps and milk mushrooms were appearing. They prepared the house for winter: they caulked the doors and windows, tidied up the rubble (an earthen embankment near the walls of the hut).
Our ancestors believed that if you heat the stove on Pokrov with apple wood, your home will be warm all winter. They also organized a holiday for the cattle: they fed them with a special reaping sheaf of oats that had been standing in the house since August 2 (Ilyin’s Day). It was believed that in this case the animals would not starve in winter.
October 14, by the way, was considered the deadline for hiring and work, repayment of debt and fulfillment of a wide variety of obligations: “From Intercession to Epiphany”, “From Intercession to Evdokeya”, “I will rent at the Intercession Fair”, “Sleep the merchant to Intercession”, “Wait until the Intercession: I will pay off the entire debt.”
