October 2 is the day of Trofim and Zosima. Place the hive in the cellar, celebrate the honey festival

CrimeaPRESS reports:

In the old days this day had many names — Fedor, Trofimov’s day, Tasty table, Trofim’s day, Zosima, Protector of the bees, Day of choosing brides and grooms, Trofimov’s evenings, Beekeepers’ Day, Beginning of the Bee Nine. The main event on October 2 was considered the beginning of the honey harvest. In addition, the hives were supposed to be prepared for the coming winter over the next nine days. They said: “Put the beehives in the cellar, celebrate the honey festival.” There was also a tradition: in the morning you had to eat a teaspoon of honey and wash it down with warm water, because this is a cure for all diseases: “They say, with honey you can swallow any disease.”

And on October 2, our ancestors organized gatherings — Trofimov’s evenings, at which girls and boys chose each other: “Happiness does not pass by on Trofim: where Trofim goes, it follows him.” At such gatherings, the guys came with honey and treated the girls. They believed that Saint Trophim helped unmarried girls find grooms. By the way, they believed that if you look closely into the eyes of the chosen one, then, according to popular belief, he will certainly respond to such a call.

At this time, they treated neighbors, friends, and relatives: they baked pancakes, which they ate, dipping them in fresh honey. That is why this day, and the entire bee ninety, was called the Tasty Table.

The Church today honors the memory of Zosimus and Trofimus.

  • Zosimus lived around the 4th century in a city where paganism was widespread. However, later, having believed in God, he retired to the desert, where he lived alongside the most dangerous animals. One day the ruler of Cilicia met Zosima and decided to find out how he managed to tame animals. To this Zosimus said that faith helps him in this, and the ruler, who was a pagan, ordered Zosima to be subjected to various torments, forcing him to renounce God. However, a large lion appeared and forced Zosima to be released. But after this the righteous man died immediately.
  • Trophimus also suffered for his faith around the 3rd century. A pagan festival was held in Antioch, during which Trofimus and his friend Savatius began to ask the Lord to bring people to their senses. For this they were captured, tortured and executed.

Signs of the day:

  • Leaves fall thicker and he orders the hive to be removed from the apiary.
  • Put the hive in the cellar — celebrate the honey holiday.
  • During the bee nine days in a row, a beggar will eat a spoonful of honey.
  • In the fall, bees seal their entrances more tightly — for the cold winter.
  • During warm winters the entrance is left open.
  • Wind from the south means a good harvest of winter crops next year.

Name days are celebrated today by: Georgy, Alexey, Maria, Igor, Makar, Trofim, David, Fedor, Konstantin, Nikolay.
