On October 20, the peasants strictly observed two traditions:
- First thing in the morning they went to feed the cattle and after that they sat down to breakfast.
- The stove was supposed to be lit by the youngest member of the family — they believed that in this case the house would be warm all winter.
In addition, on October 20, women were supposed to wear a new scarf on their heads — they believed that this would protect them from headaches throughout the year. They washed their faces with sour milk to preserve youth and beauty.
The church today honors the memory of St. Sergius of Pechersk, who lived in the 13th century. His main feat is considered to be the renunciation of his own will — Sergius completely submitted to his abbot. Therefore, he received the nickname “Obedient”. They also pray to Saint Sergius of Murom or Vologda, who, according to historical data, lived in Greece, but came to Russia to become a disciple of Sergius of Radonezh himself, having heard a lot about his spiritual exploits. After some time, he goes north to the Nurma River to retire there for prayer. There Sergius of Muromsky experiences a large number of temptations. Gradually, pilgrims begin to gather around him, as a result of which the Nurom monastery is formed. After his death, Sergius appeared to his disciple Nicephorus and ordered his grave to be cleared. Nikifor thought that this was just a dream, and therefore did not carry out Sergius’ instructions, as a result of which he was paralyzed. Only at the tomb of the saint did he receive healing. Sergius’s grave was put in order, and miracles began to happen around it.
