CrimeaPRESS reports:

“Trifon begins to mend his fur coat, and Pelagia begins to sew mittens.” In the old days, October 21 was also called Chills, because winter is no longer just looming on the horizon, but is approaching with all its might. And this day was also called Trifon and Pelageya, Winter takes away, Parashka Zyabushka, Chills, Taisiya, Pelageya — Women’s Ideas, Pochinki, Zyabushka. They tried to purchase, make or patch winter clothes in advance so that the cold would not take people by surprise. People said: “It’s bad if winter catches you by surprise and knocks you off your feet.”

On October 21, the church honors the memory of Saint Tryphon and Pelagia. Tryphon lived in the 16th century on the territory of one of the villages of the Arkhangelsk province. From childhood, he felt the need to serve God as a monk, and his intentions became even stronger after he heard words in the temple that monks become God’s chosen ones. Tryphon decides to become a monk and secretly leaves his father’s house, heading to the Perm province. There he settled on the territory of the Pyskorsky monastery and took monastic vows. During his life, Tryphon prayed and worked so hard that he did not spare himself at all, and therefore one day he even became very ill. When Tryphon was dying, Saint Nicholas appeared to him, accompanied by an angel, endowing him with the gift of miracles. The fame of Tryphon’s abilities spread throughout the entire region, and therefore, in order not to arouse envy in the hearts of his followers, he retired into the desert, and then crossed the Mulyanka River and built a monastery on Vyatka.
