October 22 is Jacob the Woodcutter's Day. Are you going to the forest? Bake pies and bread

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The day was also called Yakov Studeny, Krupnik, Day of the First Porridge, Yakov Day, Lumberjack. The peasants said that Jacob was coming and bringing cold weather. Usually the first heavy snow fell.

The main tradition on October 22 is to bake pies and treat them to your family and friends. The people believed that this would ensure prosperity and good health for all these people for the coming year.

And today they began to prepare firewood. This matter was considered very important, because how the family would survive the winter depended on it. From the very early morning, peasant carts went to the nearest birch or spruce forest and hurried to finish the work before dark. After all, the forest does not like to joke, and its owners, grandfather Lesovichok and Borovoy, look after the estate carefully and strictly. They also have assistants: Mokhoviki, Derevyaniki, Dubravitsy, Korneviki, Manila and Uvodila — if they get involved in the matter, then all you will think about is how to get away with it.

In order not to get lost in the forest and avoid injury, it was imperative to appease Borovoy. For this purpose, a crust of bread, a pot of porridge and a scarf for Borovukha (Borovoy’s wife) were left in the forest.

Trees are also not quiet; according to popular beliefs, there are some among them that can stand up for themselves. They said that pine and spruce forests were inhabited by trees with an unbridled and violent temperament. On Ivan Kupala, such a tree could come out of the forest, come to the village to the house of its offender, who, for the sake of a joke, stripped its bark, cut off its roots or broke its branches, and then it would be in trouble. If such a lush tree fell into a wall during the construction of a house, then sooner or later it would try to get out, collapsing the hut and crushing the owners.

This day was also the Day of the First Porridge. It was brewed with fresh aromatic lean oil, and sometimes with lamb or pork lard (“When you brew the porridge, don’t skimp on the butter”). They baked pies with porridge from new cereals and invited guests. They said that without porridge it would not be lunch.

Signs of the day:

  • If snow fell on thawed ground, then the future harvest will be bad.
  • If icicles hang from the roofs on this day, then autumn will drag on.
  • If the needles have not fallen off the larch, it means there will be no snow, and if it does fall, it will quickly melt.
  • If the bulbs have a lot of “clothes”, it means that the winter will be cold and harsh.
  • If the cherry leaves have not fallen, it means there will be a thaw.
  • If there is icy conditions, it will rain.
  • If a person was born on October 22, then his talisman is sapphire.

Name days are celebrated today by: Peter, Jacob, Abraham, Maxim, Konstantin, Efim.
