October 23 – Day of Eulampia-Winter-Indicator, Eulampia-Winter-Indicator

CrimeaPRESS reports:

On this day, our ancestors paid special attention to the month — they watched it, because they believed that its horns on October 23 pointed to the direction from which the winds would blow. If they point to the north, it means that winter will be harsh and fast, and the snow will fall dry. If you go south, there will be slush and dirt all the way to Kazanskaya (November 4).

And on this day they prepared splinters. They burned quickly and a lot of them were needed for the winter period. The beam was placed at an angle of 10-15 degrees in special lamps with lights (four splits). It burned out in five minutes, so when the elders went about their business: cooking, spinning and crafting, the younger members of the family regularly replaced the burnt torches with new ones. They took turns burning and shining brightly.

By the way, in the popular imagination, fire in a stove or in a burning splinter was the main element that governs the world. It was perceived both as a furious flame destroying everything in its path, from which one cannot escape, and as a hellish inferno associated with evil spirits. But, at the same time, the flame gave people warmth, helped prepare food, illuminated the home and (symbolically) was part of the sun, which very rarely appeared in the sky in autumn and winter.

On October 23, the Church honors brother and sister – Evlampia and Evlampia the Winter Guides. They lived during the reign of Emperor Maximilan, who was known for his intolerance towards followers of the Christian faith. It is interesting that Evlampius and Eulampia came from a noble family and, if they wanted, could have lived comfortably, but one day they decided to convert to Christianity in their hometown of Nicodemus. When they learned about Maximilian’s order to rid the city of all Christians, they did not run away, and Eulampius himself, moreover, laughed in the face of the emperor’s guards, for which he was captured and subjected to a lot of torture. Evlampius endured all the torment steadfastly and did not renounce his faith. Evlampia, having learned how Evlampius was suffering, also went to trial and declared herself a Christian, saying that she was ready to endure the same suffering along with her brother. The pagans tried to burn the brother and sister in the oven and boil them in boiling water, but they could not do them any harm. Then the emperor ordered that Eulampius’ head be cut off, after which his sister gave up the ghost from grief.

Signs of the day:

  • If a person was born on October 23, then topaz is considered his talisman.
  • If there is slush and dirt on the street on this day, it means that snow will not fall until November 4th.
  • The last cumulus clouds are floating across the sky.
  • On large rivers the water may already freeze.
Name days are celebrated today by: Vasily, Innocent, Andrey.
