October 26-28 in Sevastopol — Potemkin Readings

On October 26-28, 2023, the VII All-Russian Scientific Conference with international participation “Potemkin Readings” is being held at Sevastopol State University. The conference is dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the Kuchuk-Kainardzhi peace, which marked the beginning of the annexation of Crimea to Russia, the 240th anniversary of the annexation of Crimea to Russia, the founding of Sevastopol and the Black Sea Fleet. The theme of the conference is the Greater Mediterranean: past and present. The conference is held with grant support from the History of the Fatherland Foundation.

The Potemkin Readings received their name in honor of the outstanding Russian statesman, Field Marshal General, creator of the Black Sea Military Fleet, who ensured the peaceful annexation of the Crimean Peninsula to the Russian Empire, His Serene Highness Prince Grigory Alexandrovich Potemkin-Tauride (1739-1791). The conference has been held by Sevastopol State University on the basis of the Institute of Social Sciences and International Relations since 2016.

More than 100 scientists from different regions of Russia and abroad registered to participate in the conference. Among them are the largest specialists: professors and associate professors, scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences, researchers at Russian research institutes, authors of fundamental monographs and classical textbooks, as well as beginning researchers and students.

The conference is attended by researchers from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Omsk, Armavir, Ryazan, and foreign participants from Abkhazia and Serbia.

The plenary meeting of the conference is held on October 26, 2023 at the address: Sevastopol, st. Universitetskaya, 33 (main academic building, room 420) from 10:00 to 13:30. At the plenary session the following will make a welcoming speech:

  • Vladimir Dmitrievich State University,” Doctor of Political Sciences.
  • Dmitry Borisovich Tatarkov, International Relations, Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Education «Sevastopol State University», Candidate of Historical Sciences.
  • The chairman of the Sevastopol branch of the Russian Historical Society, Senator of the Russian Federation Ekaterina Borisovna Altabaeva, will deliver a welcoming speech via video link.

As part of the plenary session, there will be a presentation of the results of the joint Abkhaz-Russian expedition to explore the site of Gienos. Plenary presentations will be given by:

  • Gabelia Alik Nikolaevich – Associate Professor, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Dean of the Faculty of History of Abkhaz State University.
  • Priymak Yuri Vladimirovich – Doctor of Historical Sciences, Dean of the Faculty of History, Armavir State Pedagogical University.”
  • Danilchenko Sergey Leonidovich – professor, Doctor of Historical Sciences, head of the Department of History of Russia at Sevastopol State University.
  • Boytsova Elena Evgenievna – associate professor, candidate of historical sciences, head of the department of “General History and World Culture” of Sevastopol State University.
  • Khapaev Vadim Vadimovich – Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of General History and World Culture at Sevastopol State University.
  • Ruzaev Stanislav Valerievich – Candidate of Historical Sciences, chief researcher at the Museum-Reserve of the Heroic Defense and Liberation of Sevastopol.

Within the framework of the conference on October 26-28, 2023, 3 scientific sections will work:

  • History and archeology of the Greater Mediterranean in antiquity and the Middle Ages.
  • History of Russia and the countries of the Greater Mediterranean in modern and contemporary times.
  • Military history of the Greater Mediterranean.

In addition, as part of the conference, a scientific seminar and round table will be held: October 26, 2023 at 14:00 — Scientific seminar “Current problems of teaching the course “History of Russia” at the present stage.

October 27, 2023 at 10:00 — Round table “Through my labors and care I brought benefit to the Fatherland and the people” for the 170th anniversary of the hereditary honorary citizen, mayor of Sevastopol in 1901-1908. Alexey Andreevich Maksimov.

A collection of articles based on the conference materials was published in printed form in two volumes, will be placed article by article in the eLIBRARY electronic library and indexed in the RSCI.
