October 29 – Longinus Sotnik. Don’t stand at the gate — “pick up” the unclean

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Who is Saint Longinus — the patron saint of this day? He stood guard at the Tomb and the Cross of the Lord. They prayed to him for the healing of eye diseases, but most importantly: in the popular consciousness, he was a watchman, protecting the house from all evil spirits. Our ancestors believed that Longinus stood on the border at the gate between a hostile, dangerous, alien world and home and protected people.

By the way, people generally believed that the gate was the most dangerous place for a person, because evil spirits always lay in wait here. For protection, peasants placed either an image of the patron saint or a Sretensky or wedding candle above the gate. Also, any sharp metal object, for example, a scythe, sickle or harrow teeth, could act as a talisman. They also planted thorny plants near the fence or stuck them into its cracks, such as blackthorn, hawthorn, juniper and blackberry.

Signs of the day:

  • The moon is pale and cloudy — there will be snow and frost.
  • A bright starry sky means good weather, a dim sky means snow and rain.
  • If a goose stands on one paw, it will get colder.
  • If the sun is all in the clouds, like in a fog, there will be bad weather.
  • The wind blows from the north, which means there will be no rain and the sky will become clear.
  • If the leaves turn yellow, but practically do not fall off, then frost will not come soon.
  • The crow always sits with its beak towards the wind.
  • The appearance of prolonged fogs means a thaw.

Name days are celebrated today by: Leonty, Terenty, Ivan, Kuzma, Evgeny, Alexey, Georgy.
