The weather on October 4 was getting colder, and there could be frosts in the mornings. In the evening the barns were heated, around which the threshing men gathered, sang songs and talked. It was customary to start work at midnight — fires were lit for this purpose. Traditionally, workers were treated to oatmeal. When they sat down to eat, they always said: “For the threshers, a pot of porridge, and for the owner, a heap of bread.” In the evening, the owner treated the threshers to mash and pies in his yard.
By the way, our ancestors believed that under the barn, in its lower half (where the fire burns), lives Ovinnik, who was most often heard. However, he could appear before a fire (which were not uncommon) in the guise of a pitch-black cat with coal eyes or a tall man with disheveled hair like smoke. According to legend, this creature makes sure that the barn is not heated on inopportune, windy and holiday days. It gets angry when people show disrespect to it, and therefore can easily start a fire.
On October 4, the church honors the memory of Kondrat, one of the 70 apostles, who preached the Word of God in the 1st century in the territory of Athens and held the rank of bishop. According to legend, he converted many people to Christianity, and this aroused hatred from the pagans. Therefore, one day they attacked Kondrat and were going to stone him, but Kondrat remained alive, although he ended up in prison, where he died of hunger. The legend says that the death of Kondrat so impressed Emperor Hadrian that he subsequently issued a decree that prohibited judging a person without evidence. In addition, prayer services are held in the church in honor of Presbyter Andrei and Bishop Hypatius.
