October 7 is the day of Thekla Zarevnitsa. The dawns are crimson now
CrimeaPRESS reports:
October 7 was also called Zapryadalnitsa, Thekla Day, Thekla Zarevnitsa, Thekla, Zharenitsa, Zapryadalnyaya.
The days are already ending quickly and the nights are getting long. They said: “The day runs away like a horse.” During this period, crimson dawns could be observed. This happened because old grass was being burned in the fields, and fires were constantly visible in the evenings. Usually this was done by teenage boys. The peasants themselves heated the stoves from morning until night to dry the sheaves. It was very difficult to light a fire in a barn, and this was usually done by the most experienced and oldest man in the family. They said that drying bread is a real art. They began to thresh bread from that very first sheaf, which in the summer after the harvest was placed in the corner of the hut. They baked special bread, which had to be divided among all family members and the leftovers given to the cattle. It was believed that this is how everyone joins the sacred food, which gives prosperity and well-being.
On October 7, young girls wondered about their future. For example, at night a pie was pushed through a slightly open window. If no one takes the treat, you’ll be dressed as a girl for the next year. If a cold hand takes the pie, the marriage will be unsuccessful. A fluffy and warm palm portends an imminent marriage.
They believed that whatever you tie to Thekla, you will never be able to untie. That is why wedding celebrations were often planned for October 7th.
Signs of the day:
- There are a lot of acorns on the oak tree — for a mild winter and a fruitful summer.
- At this time, thunder promises a short, snowless and warm winter.
- If the sun shines brightly and rises quickly, the weather will change.
- If a squirrel sheds from tail to head, the winter will be cold; from head to tail, it will be slushy and long.
Name days are celebrated today by: Vasily, Sergey, Fekla, Stepan, Andrey, David, Vitaly, Vladislav, Galaktion, Pavel.
