October 9 is the day of St. John the Evangelist. The weather, they say, can predict what winter will be like
CrimeaPRESS reports:
From October 9, our ancestors began to pay more attention to the weather, trying to predict what winter would be like. By this time, it was necessary to finish winter crops and monitor precipitation: if the first snow falls when there is not a single leaf on the cherry tree, then real cold will soon come.
The church today honors the memory of John the Theologian, a saint who is considered a mentor in icon painting and painters. He is revered as God’s pilgrim, since he followed Christ to Calvary. People turn to this saint for protection on a long journey. It is believed that roads built by people (especially those with intersections) attract supernatural forces. They are inhabited by the dead, evil spirits, those who died without church repentance, and witches. These are their favorite spaces (at the same time they are paths to another world). At crossroads and roads, the unclean play at night, dance, scare and fool late wanderers. It is for this reason that a person who finds himself on the road (especially after sunset) must be careful. The favorite victims of evil spirits are drunk people. The Russian people have a lot of conspiracies that protect against unkind encounters on the road.
Signs of the day:
- A harsh winter is ahead if the leaves from the trees do not fall cleanly.
- If it rains and snows on this day, then there will be strong thaws three times in January; if it is warm and sunny, then June will be cold and rainy.
- Clear weather is expected if the grouse are in the treetops.
- The wind blows after a long lull — it means snow or rain.
- The sun sets into a cloudy whitish cloud — bad weather.
- The temperature is the same throughout the day — the bad weather will continue.
- Golden, yellow or pink sunset — the weather will be good.
- Bright stars mean pleasant weather, dim stars mean snow or rain.
- As soon as the rooks fly away, snow falls.
- Rapid leaf fall means the rapid onset of a harsh winter; but if the leaves remain green and last a long time, then the cold will be short and the frosts will not be severe.
- If it rains on this day, it will continue for another three weeks.
- If snow falls, winter will begin on November 21 (Michael’s Day).
