On November 5, Sevastopol hosted events dedicated to the all-Russian event — White Cane Month
CrimeaPRESS reports:
«White Cane» begins its history in 1921. Presumably then, the Englishman James Bigs, who had lost his sight, painted his cane white to distinguish himself from ordinary passers-by. The appearance of people holding a white cane on the streets attracted the attention of social activists and gave impetus to the emergence of a social movement of the same name.
In 1969, the International Federation of the Blind (IFB), in order to attract the attention of the general public to the problems of the blind, decided to consider October 15 as White Cane Day. This is how the white cane became the international symbol of a blind person.
8 years later, in 1987, the All-Russian Society of the Blind joined the White Cane Day. Now in Russia the White Cane month runs from October 15 to November 13. During this period, seminars, round tables, lectures and other educational events are held throughout the country, the purpose of which is to attract public attention to the problems of blind people and the formation of the urban environment taking into account the needs of visually impaired people.
Sevastopol VOS prepared a creative program about the heroic past of our city for the competition, which took place in October in the city of Gelendzhik. After returning from the competition, the Sevastopol artists decided to show it to all members of the organization, supplementing it with original poems and songs written by visually impaired people.
After watching the concert, Olga Kalenkovich thanked the organizers for the invitation and admitted that the songs and poems of the war years, read by members of the Sevastopol Vos, deeply touched her, and the original works of the concert program aroused admiration.
After the end of the event, a tea party with gifts from Sevastopol notaries took place in the club premises.
