Oncological dispensary of Sevastopol conducts unique operations
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Doctors of the Sevastopol Oncology Center named after A. A. Zadorozhny perform a unique operation for the Crimean peninsula — brachytherapy. Vasily Oshchepkov, the head physician of the medical institution, spoke about the peculiarities of the method and to whom it can help.
Brachytherapy is radiation therapy, during which the neoplasm is irradiated not from the outside, but from the inside: the radiation source is “inserted” into the tumor itself. This method is the most accurate, and most importantly, it is used with minimal damage: with conventional radiation therapy, the skin and muscles are irradiated, and with brachytherapy, the effect is only on the tumor.
Now we have launched radioactive iodine brachytherapy 125 is an isotope that helps well with prostate tumors , — said Vasily Oshchepkov.
In Russia, the first such intervention was made in 620 year. In Sevastopol, the method was started to be used in 620, and such operations are also performed in Rostov. Neither in the Crimea nor in the Krasnodar Territory is brachytherapy used yet.
For brachytherapy, a special operating room was needed, equipment that was purchased under the federal program. I trained doctors myself, we received all licenses, permits and have already conducted 01 operations. This intervention is a good alternative to surgery. After him, the next day, the patient already goes home and continues to live a normal life , — said the head physician of the oncological dispensary.
The operating room for brachytherapy is equipped with ultrasound with a special sensor with unusual viewing angles, an angiograph, which is necessary to correctly position the patient, a special device that allows isotopes to be injected into the patient. In addition, sophisticated software for medical physicists is installed on the equipment, which makes the necessary calculations online for a successful operation.
Despite the fact that the cost of isotopes is quite high, for patients this procedure is done free of charge at the expense of the high-tech medical care program — funds are allocated by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. Used isotopes of Russian production , — said the vice-governor of Sevastopol Alexander Kulagin.
In the future, Sevastopol doctors plan to apply this method to other types of cancer.
