Oncologists in Crimea performed a unique operation to remove a huge tumor from a patient

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Specialists of the State Budgetary Healthcare Institution of the Republic of Crimea “Crimean Republican Oncology Clinical Dispensary named after V.M. Efetova» performed an operation to remove a huge tumor in the patient’s retroperitoneal space.

A 66-year-old woman did not consult a doctor for a long time without feeling any symptoms of the disease. Having decided to lose weight, the patient lost 20 kilograms and discovered that her waist size did not decrease. In this regard, in September of this year, the woman turned to a medical organization for examination. As the patient’s attending physician, a surgical oncologist at the oncoabdominal oncology department of the KROKD named after. V. M. Efetova Al-Nsour Jamal, according to the results of computed tomography, a neoplasm with a diameter of more than 40 centimeters and weighing about 15 kilograms was detected in the patient’s retroperitoneal space. According to CT signs, preliminary, the neoplasm is liposarcoma (tumor of adipose tissue), — said the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Crimea.

After a thorough examination and consultation with specialists in various fields, oncologists decided to carry out radical surgery.

According to I. O. Deputy Chief Physician of the KROKD named after. V. M. Efetov Alexander Babich, the complexity of this operation lies in the fact that the tumor grew into large vessels (arteries and veins) and into the kidney. Therefore, surgery was performed on several floors of the abdominal cavity. Specialists removed the huge tumor and replaced some parts of the blood vessels that could not be saved. In addition, during the operation, the tumor was removed along with the kidney, after which the healthy organ was implanted back. The surgery lasted more than 4 hours, part of the operation was performed using a heart-lung machine. Next, the woman will face a recovery stage, after which she will be able to return to her normal life, eliminating heavy physical activity.

Tumors of this size are extremely rare because they can be detected at earlier stages.

The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Crimea reminds Crimeans that regular medical examinations and preventive medical examinations are necessary even if there is no concern. The examination will allow you to identify health problems at an early stage and promptly prescribe the necessary treatment.
