Online scammers are improving their methods. Sevastopol police warns

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Read carefully, those who rent housing.

The Sevastopol police registers cases of fraudulent activities aimed at stealing citizens’ savings in a bank account. The scheme used by online scammers is, let’s say, «improved».

On the Internet, attackers find private advertisements for renting housing and make a phone call to the landlord with a proposal to rent his home. To lull vigilance, fraudsters may pose as law enforcement officers or government officials sent to our region on a business trip. Allegedly in order to receive an advance payment, the swindlers offer to proceed to the ATM and, distracting attention with a conversation, convince them to perform some manipulations with the ATM under their dictation. As a result, the victim, without realizing it, provides access to his bank account or transfers his money to an account controlled by criminals.

In just one day, two residents of the Leninsky district of Sevastopol suffered from this fraudulent scheme — an 18-year-old girl and a 53-year-old man, who transferred a total of more than 69 thousand rubles to the attackers. According to these facts, the employees of the internal affairs bodies are taking all the necessary measures aimed at identifying and searching for criminals.

To avoid such crimes, the Sevastopol police recommend taking the following precautions:

If you received a call from an ad, then you should remain vigilant and not carry out any rash actions with payment terminals at the request of the interlocutor. In no case do not provide confidential bank card data and received SMS codes, do not install any mobile application on your smartphone, no matter what pretext you are asked to do so.

If you have suffered from a crime, then you must immediately contact the nearest territorial unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia or call 102.
