Patriarch Kirill presented a prestigious award to Northern State University associate professor Sergei Bocharov
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Associate Professor of the Department of General History and World Culture at Sevastopol State University Sergei Bocharov was awarded the second Makaryev Prize in the category “History of Orthodox Countries and Peoples” for his work “Between Byzantium, the Mongols and the Ottomans. Research on the history of Crimea in the 13th-18th centuries.”
The award was presented to the Sevastopol resident by the Patriarch of All Rus’ Kirill in the hall of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The Makaryev Prize is unique because it unites all types of humanitarian knowledge. Its prestige and importance are high in the scientific community. And here it is important to keep the bar. I would like to wish that the example of Metropolitan Macarius inspires you to sacrificial service to the Fatherland and science, — said the Patriarch, addressing the laureates.
The Metropolitan Macarius Prize is one of the highest honors in the humanities. It is dear to us with its rich 150-year history. Although it was interrupted for a certain period, it was restored thanks to the common efforts of the Orthodox Church and the Academy of Sciencessaid RAS President Gennady Krasnikov.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin sent greetings to the laureates.
At the initiative of the capital’s mayor’s office, the bonus fund was increased. This year, 71 works from universities, scientific institutes and religious institutions of 24 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, Uzbekistan and Germany were submitted to the competition. 28 doctors of science and 26 candidates of science, 12 clergy took part in the competition.
Sergey Bocharov submitted to the competition a collection of his works in Russian and English, published in 2022 in the well-known Romanian-German series Florilegium magistrorum historiae archaeologiaeque Antiquitatis et Medii Aevi, well known in scientific circles. Moreover, bilingualism was proposed by the publishers themselves.
The articles included in the collection cover a variety of issues in the history and archeology of Crimea, since Bocharov studied the region from different angles during his scientific career. Some materials are devoted to the study of ceramics — an important material for archaeologists, which makes it possible to tie an excavation layer to a specific time period. There are articles about the Byzantine period of Crimea, about the fortifications of Caffa — modern Feodosia, the main city of the medieval Republic of Genoa in Crimea; about the cities of the Crimean Khanate and the presence of the Ottoman Empire. For example, the question of the location of the city of Fula is being considered — this is still a mystery, despite the fact that the Christian Fula diocese in Crimea is known from documents.
Makarievskaya Prize established with the blessing of Metropolitan Macarius (Bulgakov) of Moscow and Kolomna in 1867 and revived in 1995 on the initiative of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus’. The project is aimed at encouraging scientific activity in the field of humanities.
