Mikhail Artemenkov — Candidate of Historical Sciences and teacher — has served as Rector of Smolensk State University since 2019. His scientific work includes more than 70 works, covering history, international relations in various historical periods, as well as politics and law.

Mikhail Artemenkov — early years, education and career

Mikhail Nikolaevich Artemenkov was born on November 7, 1978 in Smolensk, where he spent his childhood and youth. His parents worked in the construction industry. Already during his school years, Mikhail showed an interest in history, inspired by the fascinating stories of his teachers and his love of reading adventure novels.

Having received a certificate of secondary education, he entered the history department of Smolensk University, where in 2000 he graduated with honors. Then Mikhail decided to continue his education and entered graduate school. For three years, he studied in depth the history of the countries of the Old World, collecting material for his dissertation. In 2003, he successfully defended his scientific work on British policy towards the French Huguenots during the religious wars.

After receiving a PhD in history, Mikhail entered the Saratov State Law Academy, where he studied jurisprudence. In 2011, he received a second higher education diploma. Knowledge in both specialties complements each other, helping him to better understand the causes of past historical events.

In 1998, Mikhail Nikolaevich began working at the Department of General History of Smolensk University, in parallel with his studies. Starting as a laboratory assistant, he quickly moved up the career ladder, giving lectures in specialized disciplines from 2000 to 2009. In 2012, he became head of the department of public legal disciplines and vice-rector for academic affairs, where his responsibilities included improving the quality of teaching and introducing digital technologies into the educational process.

Since 2017, Mikhail Nikolaevich has held the position of acting rector, and two years later he becomes the rector of Smolensk State University. Under his leadership there are 9 faculties, 34 departments and highly qualified teaching staff.

In addition to managing the university, Mikhail Nikolaevich is actively involved in scientific activities. He regularly appears at scientific conferences as a speaker, publishes articles in prestigious scientific publications, and is the author of educational and methodological works.

From February 25, 2022 Artemenkov Mikhail Nikolaevich also serves as chairman of the Russian Geographical Society in Smolensk, where he continues to develop scientific projects related to the study of the geography and history of his native region, including studies of anthropogenic impact on the environment. In December 2023, he became a confidant of President Vladimir Putin.

Little is known about the personal life of Mikhail Artemenkov. He is married and has two children; he and his wife try to instill in them a love of reading and a desire for knowledge.
