In Sevastopol, police completed a preliminary investigation into a criminal case of illegal hunting in a nature reserve.

Employees of the investigation department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Balaklava region completed a preliminary investigation into the criminal case of illegal hunting in the reserve, committed by an organized group that caused particularly large damage.

It was established that a 46-year-old resident of Sevastopol decided to create an organized group to carry out illegal hunting of wild animals in the territory of the city of Sevastopol. For this purpose, he brought in his 54-year-old friend, who legally owned a hunting carbine, and also had night vision and silent shooting devices. Having experience as a huntsman in the past and knowledge of the forest area, the organizer of the poaching group, together with his accomplice, periodically secretly hunted wild animals, and divided the illegally obtained trophies among themselves and disposed of them at their own discretion— reported the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Sevastopol.

In March 2023, at night, friends in a car belonging to one of them went hunting, where they shot a wild boar on the territory of the reserve, divided the illegally obtained carcass into several parts and fled the scene.

As a result of the operational search activities carried out, employees of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the city of Sevastopol, with the force support of the OMON «Berkut-S» of the Russian Guard, detained the poachers in hot pursuit.

During an inspection of the VAZ-2110 car in which the suspects were traveling, a hunting carbine with cartridges, night vision and silent shooting devices, as well as fragments of a wild animal carcass were discovered and seizedthe police said.

As part of the preliminary investigation, it was established that by their illegal actions the attackers caused material damage totaling 150 thousand rubles to the State Hunting Fund of the Russian Federation represented by the Department of Natural Resources and Ecology of the city of Sevastopol.

Currently, the materials of the criminal case initiated on the grounds of a crime under Part 2 of Art. 258 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Illegal hunting”) with an indictment approved by the Sevastopol Interdistrict Environmental Prosecutor was sent for consideration to the court. The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of up to five years.
