Police warn: remote scammers are stealing the savings of gullible Sevastopol residents
CrimeaPRESS reports:
In our city, cases of remote fraud continue to be registered, when criminals play on the fear of a potential victim.
When making a telephone call, scammers introduce themselves as law enforcement officers or bank employees and report attempts to steal savings in the account, impose debt obligations under an allegedly concluded loan agreement, or other troubles that threaten major damage. Under the pretext of avoiding property damage, scammers insist on strict compliance with their demands. Realizing that your family and friends can dissuade you from rash actions, the attackers demand that you not tell anyone about your communication with them and threaten with criminal liability for disclosing “investigative secrets.” The essence of their demands boils down to compulsion to transfer funds to accounts under their control, which they call “reserve” or “safe”,” noted the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Sevastopol.
Please note that scammers often know banking and law enforcement terminology, have some information about citizens (for example, they can address you by name and patronymic, know about your place of residence and whether your family members have a vehicle), and also often make calls with the logo of banking organizations or government authorities.
To avoid becoming a victim of a crime, when you receive the calls described above, you should remain calm, reasonable and not follow any instructions from the scammers, no matter who they pretend to be. Remember that real law enforcement officers and representatives of financial institutions never demand the transfer of funds to other accounts, do not force you to install any programs on your gadget, and do not ask for confidential data.
In such a situation, we recommend immediately interrupting the conversation with the stranger and reporting a suspicious call to the police by calling 102.
