Ramaposa: Putin's arrest could lead to serious consequences
CrimeaPRESS reports:
South African President Cyril Ramaposa stressed that a hypothetical arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin by order of the International Criminal Court (ICC) would lead to a declaration of war on Russia. He stated this in documents that were submitted to the High Court of the South African province of Gauteng.
“It would be reckless, unconstitutional and illegal exercise of the powers given to the government to declare war on Russia by arresting President Putin,” Ramaposa said. He stressed that such action would be inconsistent with the South African constitution and pose a risk of going to war with Russia, which would violate his constitutional obligations to protect national sovereignty and peace in the country.
The court put pressure on the president by making public his affidavit concerning the demand of the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) party to comply with the ICC’s demand for Putin’s arrest. Despite this, Ramaposa stated that he had no objection to the release of his affidavit.
Earlier, the ICC had issued arrest warrants for Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, the presidential commissioner for children’s rights, on charges of «illegal deportation» of Ukrainian children. Russian officials did not recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC and noted that possible arrest warrants are legally void.
In light of these developments, the President of South Africa invited all the leaders of the BRICS member countries to the upcoming August summit in Johannesburg in order to discuss important issues and strengthen cooperation within the association.
