The construction of the sculptural composition — the monument to the Heroic Defenders of Sevastopol in 1941-1942, known to every resident and guest of the white stone as “Sailor and Soldier”, began in 1981 under the leadership of architect Nikolai Zharikov and lasted more than a quarter of a century: the monument was officially opened in 2007. Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev announced the beginning of the restoration of this monument, one of the symbols of Sevastopol.
First of all, comprehensive emergency response work will be carried out here. The granite cladding is falling off in places, and the monument itself needs to be cleaned and the patches that were inserted into it made of ferrous metal need to be changed, violating the technology.
The following will be restored: the pedestal, the figures of a soldier and a sailor, the interior, the sculptural composition “Eternal Flame”, the observation deck, and the fence. It is planned to install new lighting throughout the entire space and illuminate the sculpture itselfnoted the head of the city.
According to Razvozhaev, the contractor faces voluminous and painstaking work. The chief engineer, restorer, certified by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Georgy Gegiadze, is a native Sevastopol resident, so he approaches the object with great responsibility.
They plan to restore the copper figures of the Soldier and Sailor on site, with the help of portable equipment and the installation of scaffolding; the restoration of other elements will already take place in the workshop.
The square adjacent to the sculpture will be landscaped with new pedestrian paths and bicycle parking. Specialists will also install new benches and trash cans and landscape the area. Set the task to complete the main work at the site by May 9,” Mikhail Razvozhaev clarified.
