Roskoshestvo warns about a new method of stealing Telegram accounts
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Roskoshestvo warned about a new method of stealing accounts: attackers inform users about an allegedly submitted application to delete an account.
Under the guise of messenger technical support staff, scammers inform users about a request they previously received to delete their account. Next, the attackers offer to go to a phishing site that is visually similar to Telegram, where the victim’s phone number is requested, as well as a security code that allows you to log into the user’s account.
According to Roskachestvo, about 5% of messenger users have already encountered this type of fraud.
Today we can say with confidence that Telegram has become one of the most popular platforms among scammers, notes Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications. “There are quite objective reasons for this – first of all, the popularity of the messenger. The total number of Telegram users in Russia has reached 85 million; over the past 2-3 years, this particular messenger has become the main platform for not only everyday, but also business communication. This is what scammers take advantage of when migrating from social networks and other instant messengers.explains the deputy.
According to him, the management of the messenger reacts quite quickly to the emergence of new types of fraud.
For example, fraudulent groups are blocked quite quickly if users leave complaints. In addition, messages from a user who is not on the citizen’s contact list are usually accompanied by a warning about possible spamthe parliamentarian emphasizes.
Nemkin also recalled that the messenger does not collect applications to delete an account.
In addition, technical support contacts the user either through its official channel, or if the citizen himself asked for help through the “Volunteer Support” bot, – he explained.
According to the parliamentarian, connecting two-factor authentication could be an additional method of protection for users.
Two-factor authentication must be enabled on all resources where your personal data is potentially stored, including personal correspondence. Thanks to this tool, the user will always be warned about unauthorized login to the account. In addition, it is important to remember that government agencies or banking organizations will never contact a citizen through the messenger, and also be extremely wary of unknown accounts offering to switch to a third-party resource. The likelihood of encountering phishing is extremely high“, concluded the deputy.
