Russia has taken another step towards introducing 5G technology

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Roscosmos will free up the range that the International Telecommunication Union recently designated for the development of fifth-generation communications. However, mobile operators are interested in obtaining other frequencies.

Roscosmos has developed a new radio frequency plan, the implementation of which will free up a significant part of the 6425–7125 MHz range for mobile operators, said Anton Stepanov, head of the Roscosmos radio frequency center. Recently, the specified range was determined for the development of fifth generation mobile communication networks (5G) in the region to which Russia belongs, Stepanov told RBC.

According to a Roscosmos representative, the organization does not plan to use the 6700-6925 MHz band there, moving the development of satellite communication systems to other parts of the range.

We think about the future, so we did this work in advancesaid Stepanov.

At the same time, the possibility and conditions of using 6425–7125 MHz for 5G networks in Russia are still being discussed, he emphasized.

The appropriate range for the development of 5G in the region, which in addition to Russia includes Europe, Africa, Mongolia, the Middle East and the Gulf countries, was determined by the International Telecommunication Union at the end of last year. From the assessments of the association of mobile operators GSMA it follows that the use of this range for the development of 5G was supported by countries in which 60% of the world’s population lives.

The Russian Ministry of Digital Development noted that proposals to use the frequency band 6700–6925 MHz have not yet been discussed. “The radio frequency spectrum is a limited resource; we need to find conditions for joint operation in the entire range of 6425–7125 MHz. The specific conditions for its use are currently being worked out; they should be determined in the coming years, – noted the representative of the ministry.

At the same time, mobile operators are more interested in allocating frequencies of 3.4–3.8 GHz, which today are occupied by satellite networks and systems of law enforcement agencies. As a Megafon representative explained, under current conditions the range 6425–7125 MHz cannot be used in mobile networks.

It will be in demand in the next 10–12 years. With a high degree of confidence, we can assume that in this frequency band the equipment of networks following 5G generations will be standardized. Therefore, for the speedy development of 5G in our country, the allocation of spectrum in the 3 GHz range remains extremely important.he explained.

Which frequencies will become the main ones for the development of 5G in Russia is still a matter of discussion, notes Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications.

So far, for the development of promising radio technologies, which includes 5G, the band 4.4–4.99 GHz has been identified. However, the updating of the rules for using the 694–790 MHz range for telecom operators is now being discussed. Currently, it is assigned as an additional one for the development of 5G networks in the Russian Federation; the majority of the range is occupied by digital and analogue broadcasting, without the consent of the operators of which it is prohibited to use itnoted the deputy.

According to preliminary forecasts of the Russian Government, the introduction of fifth generation communications should begin in megacities of the country as early as 2026, and by 2035, the introduction of 5G should affect cities with a population of 100 thousand people or more.

Allocation of the range, as well as the distribution of frequencies between market players, is now, of course, one of the priority issuessays Anton Nemkin.

According to the deputy, the interest of telecom operators in another range is explained by the lack of the necessary infrastructure to build a network in the range of 6700–6925 MHz.

Neither in Russia nor in the world has serial production of equipment for these frequencies been launched. Several countries have just started testing the first systems. But I would like to emphasize that this is more about creating conditions for the future, and Roscosmos’s step in this case is the right one. This will allow us to now focus on the use of these frequencies, including in terms of the production of the necessary iron, – the deputy emphasizes.
