Russian bone marrow donors want to get more benefits

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Bone marrow donors in Russia should have the same benefits and guarantees as blood donors. Yes, notes «Parliamentary newspaper», say the deputies of the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly Vsevolod Belikov, Pavel Krupnik, Alexander Rzhanenkov and Denis Chetyrbok. They submitted a draft federal law with appropriate amendments for consideration by their colleagues.

Guaranteed Lunch

Petersburg deputies propose to supplement the Labor Code and the Federal Law “On Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues”, namely, articles that state that blood donors are entitled to guaranteed days off during examinations and delivery of biomaterial, as well as food, which is not replaced by monetary compensation. Petersburg deputies propose to extend the same benefits to bone marrow or hematopoietic stem cell donors.

Blood has always been in demand. Now there is a need for bone marrow. It is needed in the treatment of a fairly wide range of diseases. We discussed the initiative to support citizens who act as donors with professional communities. In addition, members of our youth parliament also expressed such a proposal in parallel, — explained deputy Alexander Rzhanenkov.

Harder than just blood

Bone marrow transplantation is most often used in the treatment of cancer, leukemia. It is used for damage to the lymphatic system, with hereditary diseases. It is known that transplantation of virus-resistant bone marrow remains the most promising technology for the complete elimination of HIV.

The need for transplantation in our country is experienced annually by about 20 thousand people.

Often people confuse the bone marrow with the spinal cord. And they are afraid of becoming donors.

There are several methods for harvesting bone marrow. The simplest is similar to donating blood: it is taken from a vein and filtered, taking stem cells. The rest of the blood is returned to the donor. The procedure, however, lasts longer — about four hours.

Another method is sampling under anesthesia: bone marrow fluid is taken from the pelvic bone with a syringe. And then stem cells are taken from it.

Russian bank

Pediatric surgeon and oncologist, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, Senator Vladimir Krugly recalled that a number of measures to support bone marrow donors had recently been approved by federal law. First of all, we provided free transportation for them to the place of sampling and a free examination.

On the whole, he considers the initiative of the St. Petersburg parliamentarians logical. But he considers it necessary to clarify that comparing blood donors and bone marrow donors and putting them in the same row should not be:

Bone marrow donation is not exactly blood donation. Blood can be donated once every two months, and plasma twice a month. And if we can talk about blood donation as a kind of regular process, then bone marrow donation is a one-time procedure. In the best case, the fence can be done twice with an interval of several years. The main thing is the entry into the register. But the procedure is lengthy, and a person may never wait until the need arises specifically for his donation.the parliamentarian notes.

Vladimir Krugly explained why recently more and more experts are talking about the need to replenish the Russian register of bone marrow donors:

Previously, we widely used European registries and selected donors not only among Russians. But today there are problems with it. Due to well-known events, logistics became more complicated. Previously, it was possible to load bone marrow onto an airplane and deliver it quickly. Today we need a broad Russian bank of donorssays the parliamentarian.

The unified Russian federal register of bone marrow donors has been maintained since 2022. As of April 24, 2023, the database contains information about the HLA genotypes of more than 204,000 Russian donors.

Those who do not have medical contraindications can apply to the bone marrow donor register through Gosuslugi or recruiting centers located in many cities of Russia. The recommended age of the donor is from 18 to 45 years.
