«Scarlet Sails» blossomed over the Sevastopol Theater of the Young Spectator

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The theatrical premiere of the musical extravaganza based on the story of the same name by Alexander Grin took place in SevTuZ 24 in January. On the eve of Student’s Day, Sevastopol residents were presented with a play about faith, hope and all-conquering love.

It is symbolic that the stage version of the famous story was embodied in the year — the anniversary of writing the story. The stage director Honored Artist of Russia Olga Pankratova believes that Sevastopol needs such a performance. The scenography is designed to surprise even before the start of the performance: the wooden structures of a huge ship are located throughout the stage and beyond it, real sails made of theatrical silk are painted either blue or scarlet in the course of the plot, a turntable with a ladder and a helm at the top moves us to Assol’s house, then to the captain’s bridge of Gray’s ship, then to the tavern , — they say in the theater.

The action begins with the introduction of the first character, who was crossed out in the subsequent edition of the story by the author himself — Mas-Tuel (Sergey Bukov). On his behalf, the story of the girl and the captain is told.

Charming, poignant, exciting. This is just what you are waiting for. But the dramatic narrative deafens you. Olga Pankratova balances between these two lines. First, these are experiences because of the fate of Mary (Victoria Sivacheva) and Longren (Honored Artist of the City of Sevastopol Vladimir Solovyov). And then — their daughters Assol (Ekaterina Kvasova).

Men’s images are also interesting. Longren (Honored Artist of the City of Sevastopol Vladimir Solovyov), Menners and Khin — son (Igor Tsvetkov), Coal Miner (Matvey Chernenko), Gray (Honored Artist of the City of Sevastopol Danil Vysotsky) are also very different, as Grin intended. But they are also driven by love — for their daughter, for the sea, for a beautiful girl.

Especially for the Sevastopol «Scarlet Sails» author’s music was written, which sounds throughout the performance. The magical world of Assol, the rebellious — Gray and doomed — residents of Kaperna managed to hear the frontman of the group «Li’Der» Alexander Barulin and Konstantin Yurchenko. Acoustic performance of the Troubadour (leader of the SHAM band Aleksey Kaplev) sounds from the stage. There was also a place for «instrumental hooliganism»! For example, the composition «Storm» is an art rock with a live electric violin, with complex parts.

To create volume and the effect of complete immersion, almost the entire troupe of the theater is involved and they all sing «live». The polyphonic choral numbers and arias performed by the artists penetrate the very soul, making one believe that all this actually happened on the shores of the Sevastopol Bay.

The production turned out to be so multifaceted and voluminous that even third-rate characters (residents of Caperna, fresh flowers) keep your attention! An amazing work by plastic director Konstantin Mishin (Moscow). Accurate sharp movements convey the stinginess of the townspeople in relation to Longren, hostility to the world of fantasies and dreams — in the scenes with the Tavern; love for the sea — Gray’s team, softness and tenderness of Assol — throughout the performance.

The musical extravaganza «Scarlet Sails» is designed not only for teenagers, but also for their parents. And those who are just about to get acquainted with Green’s work, and those who have long forgotten the school curriculum, will definitely find something unique for themselves, something that only he will discover. Someone will focus on selfless parental love, someone will think about how cruel society can be and how careless we can be in our judgments, someone will remember how important it is to dream at any age, someone will believe in love. And everyone will certainly enjoy the bright romantic fairy tale, so poignantly told by the artists of the Sevastopol Youth Theater.
