September 11 – The beheading of John the Baptist and the day of Ivan the Poletny

CrimeaPRESS reports:

September 11 was also popularly called the Turnip Day or Fasting Day. They believed that from this moment autumn gradually came into its own, and they said: “Ivan came and took summer with him.” And on this day, birds begin to fly to warmer regions.

The Church today celebrates a great holiday — the Beheading of John the Baptist. According to the Holy Scriptures, the great prophet John the Baptist (Forerunner), who baptized Jesus Christ at one time, died due to the fault of evil people. The then king Herod Antipas and his wife Herodias hated the prophet because he denounced their violations of Jewish traditions. One day, Herodias’ daughter, Salome, taught by her mother, asked Herod to bring her the head of John. The executioners seized the prophet and executed him.

On this day, people have long been forbidden to cut round objects (watermelon, cabbage, pumpkin) and eat them. Work such as picking apples and digging potatoes was also prohibited. Believers adhere to a one-day fast, abstaining not only from animal food, but also from all kinds of temptations. And in the old days there were plenty of the latter — after all, this holiday coincided with the beginning of preparations for fairs and festivities on the occasion of the new harvest!

Signs of the day:

  • Thunder rumbles — for warm autumn days.
  • The cranes fly away — to a short autumn and imminent cold weather.
  • Starlings don’t fly south — for Indian summer.
  • Many rooks mean persistent sunny weather.
  • A flock of swans overhead means the first snow will fall soon.
  • Geese flying past means bad weather.
  • If you have a headache on this day, you need to pray to John the Baptist, and everything will go away.
  • Taking a knife in your hands is a sin. The same applies to the shovel, ax and scythe.
  • If you cut a head of cabbage on this day, blood may flow from it.
  • Cutting round objects means bad luck for John.
  • Even poppy cannot be cut on this day, because its boxes are round in shape.
  • Singing and dancing to John is a great sin!
  • Sewing and knitting are also prohibited.
  • Wearing red clothes on September 11th means trouble. Bringing red flowers into the house is also prohibited.
  • Whoever eats John’s meal will not go to heaven after death.
  • If a lonely person goes to church on this day and stands through the entire service, he will soon meet his fate.
  • Anyone born on this day will grow up patient and hardworking.
