September 16 is Vasilisa's Day. Clean up your home and you will be happy
CrimeaPRESS reports:
On September 16, our ancestors passed through hard work and everyday chores. They prepared stables, sheds, and outbuildings for the cold, and put things in order in the hallway and in their own chests. Old and worn things were thrown away or burned, making room for new things. In the evenings, women sat down to their traditional household work: yarn, weaving, embroidery and other needlework. The girls spent their evenings at gatherings with young people.
The Church today honors the memory of the martyr Vasilisa, who suffered at the age of 9 for her faith in Christ under the Emperor Diocletian. Until the 18th century, in Russian lives of saints, Vasilisa was called Vassa or Vasilisa. Because of a denunciation, the saint was captured and brought to the perfect Alexander, who tried to persuade the girl to renounce her faith and worship pagan idols, but his attempts were unsuccessful. Then the perfect ordered Vasilisa to be subjected to terrible torture: she was beaten in the face, stripped naked and hung upside down by her legs, burned with fire and fumigated with sulfur smoke. and then thrown into a burning oven. The martyr, having made the sign of the cross, came out of the fire unharmed. Then she was given to wild animals to be eaten, but they did not touch the saint. Subsequently, the perfect released the girl, and he himself believed in Christ and spent the rest of his life in repentance. After the torture, Vasilissa went outside the city and, standing on a stone, said a prayer. At her request, a healing spring gushed out of the stone, the water from which subsequently healed many Christians. Near this stone the martyr died peacefully. Bishop Anthony buried her.
