September 24 is Fedorin's day. The sun, they say, is going out…

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The people were sure: on Fedorin’s day the sun goes out. The heat goes away and lingering autumn rains and slush begin. These days were devoted to work — putting things in order in the household for the fall. The beekeepers prepared the hives for the cold, transferred the bees to the omshaniks, finished collecting onions in the gardens, and harvested the remaining crops in the fields.

The ritual drink of this day was homemade beer. The process of brewing beer is very long and labor-intensive, it took from several weeks to several months. The beer was prepared ahead of time — it was believed that it should be ready by Fedorin’s day!

On September 24, the church honors the memory of Saint Theodora of Alexandria, who, according to historical data, lived in the 5th century. The legend says that Fedora lived with her husband in peace and harmony, but one day a rich man, seeing Fedora, decided to conquer her and seduce her. As a result, he bribed Fedora’s relatives, who deceived her and said that the sin committed at night was not really a sin. The woman obeyed and cheated on her husband, and only then realized what act she had committed. Then Fedora hated her body and subjected herself to various tortures. The abbess, seeing her suffering, reminded Fedora of the story of Mary Magdalene — a harlot who repented and deserved forgiveness. Then Fedora decided to go to the monastery secretly from everyone. So, she changed into a man’s dress and entered a monastery, calling herself Fedor. After Fedora’s death, her husband learned about his wife’s feat and took monastic vows in this monastery.

Signs of the day:

  • Wearing gold-colored clothes (or simply with gold threads) on this day is good luck.
  • If you go out into the field and worship the winter crops, there will be a rich harvest!
  • The girl’s hem gets dirty that day — her husband will be a drunkard.
  • Conducting empty conversations on Fedorin’s day is a sin!
  • Bees do not want to calm down, they fly in flocks across the omshan — leading to a long autumn and late winter.
  • If a young couple eats a cabbage dish on this day, the marriage will be happy!
  • Painting your lips on Fedorin’s day means illness.
  • Washing your hair is a sign of failure.
  • Walking under the moon the day before means meeting an unclean spirit. In general, it is believed that on this day otherworldly forces are especially active.
