September 25 is Artamonov day. Beware of snakes!

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Artamonov day in some regions of Russia was called “snake day,” because from this day snakes leave their summer nests in the fields and move into the forest, from where they go into the underground kingdom until spring. Even for our contemporaries, meeting a flock of snakes is not a test for the faint of heart! And such an event completely filled the ancient Russian peasant with superstitious horror!

Our ancestors also believed that with Artamon all life in the forest comes to a standstill. Birds hide in the hollows of trees, animals in holes wait for the approaching cold weather. Nature is intensively preparing for winter! But for many animals, the rutting period begins in the fall — for example, deer.

On September 25, the church honors the memory of the holy martyr Artamon, who lived in the 4th century and was known as an Italian bishop. At one time, Artamon managed to convert a large number of people who had previously been pagans to Christianity. As a result, an entire community was formed, for which Artamon built and consecrated a temple. However, at that time the country was ruled by Emperor Diocletian, known for his intolerance towards Christians. Therefore, Artamon was arrested, but managed to escape from prison and continued to preach for a long time. One day, the legend says, a pagan temple was destroyed by converts, and the pagans themselves, as revenge, attacked the temple and killed Artamon, who was praying in it.

Signs of the day:

  • A long evening leads to rain the next morning.
  • A sunny day means clear weather.
  • By September 25, the trees are bare — early winter.
  • Strong morning frosts mean a good rye harvest.
  • Before Artamonov’s day, the first snow fell, signaling an unprecedented wheat harvest.
  • If all the root vegetables in the garden are not removed before this day, they will be rotten and unfit for food.
  • You cannot go into the forest or into the swamp — you can meet the Basilisk himself (a fairy-tale monster, the patron saint of snakes).
  • A lot of snakes in the forests — a cold winter.
  • If a hunter catches a hare, he will have good luck all year.
  • To avoid a snake bite, you need to pray to Saint Artamon on his feast day.
  • A snake has already crawled into the yard — fortunately. Such a “happy” snake must be fed with milk or a raw egg.
  • Killing a snake on this day means a bad harvest.
  • Buying and selling medicines that contain snake venom is unlucky.
