On September 27, believers celebrate a great holiday — the Exaltation of the Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. This church holiday was established in honor of the discovery of the cross in the 4th century. This happened in Jerusalem. The pagan emperors, having decided to destroy all memories of what happened on Golgotha, ordered to cover it with earth and erect a statue of Jupiter and the temple of the goddess Venus in this place. However, 300 years later, Emperor Constantine ascended the throne, who was distinguished by his mercy towards believers. According to legend, the cross was found by the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, Queen Helena. It was they who organized the excavations, as a result of which they discovered the cave of the Holy Sepulcher and, not far away, three crosses. It is interesting that only a miracle helped to find out where the cross on which Jesus was crucified was located. A sick woman touched him and was healed.
On September 27, Orthodox Christians adhere to strict fasting (dry eating): they abstain not only from
animal food, but also from plant food that has been subjected to heat treatment (boiling, frying, baking or stewing). Only raw vegetables and fruits are allowed. Only in the late afternoon are some relaxations allowed.
People have many beliefs and legends associated with this holiday. The most famous of them: snakes crawl out of their holes this day to bask in the sun for the last time, to gain strength before hibernation in the underground kingdom. Animals curl up into balls and have “snake weddings.” On this day they were also careful about Leshy — special protective rituals are associated with him.

- A goblin howled in the forest — someone nearby will die a terrible death (drown or hang himself).
- On Vozdvizhenye you cannot even pass by the place where a murder was once committed — the evil spirit will lead you astray.
- If a person gets lost on this day, he must take off his clothes, shake them, read a prayer and put them on again. It is believed that such a ritual protects against devils and helps a person quickly find the right path.
- If you see strange footprints on the ground, do not cross them under any circumstances. These could be traces of forest evil spirits. Anyone who crosses them will soon become seriously ill.
