September 3 — Thaddeus Day, St. Basil's Day
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The people devoted September 3 to one occupation — they removed flax. Our ancestors treated this plant with special respect. The benefits were great! Yarn was spun from flax fibers, which was then twisted into threads, woven, and clothes for the whole family were sewn from the resulting material. Flax seeds were used for oil, they were also taken as a medicine. They said: «You sow flax — you reap gold.» And Saint Vasilisa, the patroness of this day, was affectionately called the “linen”.
The church now honors St. Thaddeus, one of the 70 apostles, who was not among the closest apostles. Thaddeus was born in the city of Edessa in Syria. Once, having come to Jerusalem for one of the holidays, Thaddeus heard how John the Baptist was preaching. As a result, Thaddeus decided to be baptized by him in the waters of the Jordan River. Much later, Thaddeus met Jesus himself and became his disciple. After the execution of Christ and his Divine resurrection, Thaddeus went to preach in Mesopotamia and Syria. He managed to convert many people in his hometown, and as a result, even the ruling prince Avgray, as well as several pagan priests, accepted Christianity. Very often the sermons of Thaddeus were accompanied by miracles. For example, Avgray himself was cured of leprosy when he met with the apostle. He really wanted to reward Thaddeus, but he refused everything and went to preach in other cities. Once in Virit (now known as Beirut), Thaddeus founded a church there and soon died thereafter.
Notes of the day:
- If the weather is good on this day, then over the next 4 weeks it will also be warm and sunny, without rain.
- Were there many acorns? There will be a lot of snow at Christmas.
- Mice make nests on shocks — according to signs, autumn will be rainy and long.
- People who were born on September 3rd can be good healers. As a talisman, they should wear talismans with carnelian and chalcedony.
- The tops of the birch trees turned yellow — autumn will come early. If the birch turned yellow from below, the “Indian summer” will be long, and the leaf fall and cold will come late.
- The mountain ash rapidly bears fruit — by the rain. Few mountain ash — to dry weather.
- There are a lot of cobwebs — to heat.
- If a person who is going on a journey on this day puts a dried flax stalk in his pocket, he will be lucky on the road.
- Those who perform magical rites on this day should wear linen clothes.
- If all the apples are not harvested by September 3, the next year the tree will not produce a harvest.
- If a boy born on this day is called Fadey, he will be incredibly happy!
- Well, on this day, business related to travel will go. But it is better to start them after lunch.
- Listening to other people’s advice on September 3 is a bad omen, they will turn out to be wrong.
